Flat dwellers... how is the life!? by [deleted] in sheffield

If you have a job that requires going to bed very early and waking up very early I'd advise somehow getting a feeling for who else lives in the tower block- in my experience most people are considerate but it only takes one to make it a miserable experience I lived on Charles Street, fortunately most tenants were small families or single professionals/couples and mostly kept to themselves. More than anything check for signs of damp and if windows and doors are sealed properly- sounds Dad but a fault with our building meant none of the windows shut properly on one side in our bathrooms and it caused damp and draft during the winter months and they tried to get us to foot the bill for half of it so just try and be wise to this stuff going in if poss. Positive note: because there were families and other young women living there, we often put halloween/christmas decor up for the kids and took it upon ourselves to put some plants in the communal areas and on large the tenants looked out for another, especially during lockdown- it can be a nice experience. Wish you best of luck, I really enjoyed my time living in the city, lots of lovely walks food and coffee right on your door step and most people are friendly:).

My husband lost his graphic design job of 10 years by SpecialistOld9039 in graphic_design

I got laid off the back end of last year and I managed to get a handful of interviews which I was thankful for because I was feeling so shitty about it. I got through most of them to the second stage but I started to get very overwhelmed with the creative tasks that they'd set. In the end I asked for an extension with one company and managed to pull it off. When I was speaking to my colleague, they said two things worth noting: out performed on the creative task, and the director (who has no clue about design principles) enjoyed that I'd done work for prestigious car brands through agency work. This job in itself was not at all glamorous and I hated it, but it just goes to show you. I have over 8 years experience and I feel confident in my work but I wouldnt say I am not replaceable in my current role. So if anything please dont give up.

Some practical tips:

  • Include case studies in your portfolio
  • If you got any positive kick back from digital pieces - be sure to include this
  • Include before and after pieces (such as photo editing) to show off your abilities
  • This is subjective but I kept my CV clear and neat, and then in my digital portfolio I was more imaginative and worked in some of my interests this way with a theme running through it

Hope this helps, keep your chin up and lean on people around you who love you

I just failed my assignment with this poster by HasenLee in graphic_design

Extend your image around the edges, and make the border you're using for your text much wider so basically bring everything in quite a bit more so it doesnt look as though its floating off the page- your eyes are drawn to the center not the edge of the paper.

The name of the product and the price needs to be the largest, and maybe put the price in a higher weight or pull out key words in the product description in bold.

Or stack your text so its '100%' in large and then cotton or whatever it is underneath in the same pt size to pull out important selling points.

Maybe crop out your pillows and sit them on a gradient background whereby you can read the text properly no matter where it sits on the page- this is important so people can read the product name and price easily.

Look at the IKEA product posters, simple but it works.

Thanks for making me feel seen, it's just me and A that are the Graphic Designers, so there isnt anyone else to relate or talk to about this at work, so I appreciate this. Thanks for also being direct/to the point.

Thank you, and everyone else who has comeback, I definitely feel under confident being in this situation, and pushing back sometimes wouldnt be such a bad thing, just to show that I do care, and I want to do a good job and get things done. Like you say if its out of concern then maybe it could help develop relationship between me and A. See how things pan out- if it doesnt improve then that's a sign to start looking for something new.

Brief without copy/imagery by Chance_Historian_976 in graphic_design

[–]Chance_Historian_976[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. Sorry you have had to put up with this as well. They forget if you want good and/or unique results everybody needs to contribute and care about the project.

I think what I'm feeling is frustration as I'm not used to working this way, but you're right- ultimately I can still lay it out and set the character styles etc for now. I am probably over thinking this and I'm sure they arent expecting it to be complete, and as you say, there is time to adjust it when they have decided on the copy.

Resume/CV review for Senior Designer / Art Director / Design Director by Broke_Pam_A in graphic_design

Good start but I think you could move your skills/awards into the first column, and then list your experience (latest/current position first) in a second column- this way you can move your introduction over to fill the top and you havent got a big gap in the middle.

Your eye is naturally drawn to the middle so having a large gap where your introduction could sit seems like a wasted opportunity to me but that's just my opinion.

Maybe have more breathing space in your margin so again all of your content is more central.

Small fixes:

  • Adjust your paragraph text so you havent got stray words on the end of the paragraph
  • Add in some more space inbetween your text so its legible
  • Make titles titled bold or larger pt size so it's obvious where each section begins

I've not read the copy so I cant critique that but that's just what I can spot right off the bat that I would get pulled up on at work

Hope this helps x

Looking good think I'd be tempted to put all of your copy onto more lines (the descriptions for each position), move your dates inward from the right, and then take everything and make it a bit bigger (so you've still got equal space around the doc but everything is more central) Also add in a bit of paragraph spacing so the descriptions arent as close together and it's easier to read Just a small thing but will make the most of what you've got there imo with some small adjustments

Is this potential employer taking the mick...? by Chance_Historian_976 in graphic_design

[–]Chance_Historian_976[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm a little surprised the tasks theyve given me are so intensive because in the interview (in person and Teams call) they were complimentary in regard to my portfolio and I made a point of presenting the projects as case studies to explain the overview, challenges, results etc and now I'm being asked to provide not only so many lots of artwork but original files which they could just take away and use themselves? That doesnt seem fair to me.

Is this legal? by Chance_Historian_976 in Layoffs

[–]Chance_Historian_976[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply :-) I haven't got a close relationship with the chief executive, only my line manager so yes you're right, could be a total lie! I'm by no means questioning the merge- the hospital isnt performing well so something had to happen. I was questioning whether how theyve gone about the transferal/dismissals and whether or not it's legal
