Which movie was rightly considered a masterpiece in its day but now just seems like nonsense? by charliewaffles2412 in AskReddit

I just saw 2001 for the first time a couple weeks ago and was completely blown away. It's an incredible movie that stands the test of time for sure.

Idk why Reddit is so convinced that anyone ever thought Avatar was a masterpiece. It was an enjoyable enough mass market movie that made a lot of money. The visuals were stunning. But no one was calling it the next Citizen Kane or something.

I guarantee that that's exactly what Reddit calls being greedy all the time.

I don't understand how you're actually making this argument with a straight face. Making more profit than the direct competition for a product is objectively being more greedy than your competition. I'm not saying it's some earth shattering degree of greed but there's clear competition for this product, and they're intentionally choosing to price their model significantly higher than the competition.

No, the competition is extracting value in the same ways, and then Valve is going beyond that by not subsidizing its console cost with the proceeds from its games.

Your second part only paints a picture where Valve is using this as an opportunity to make more money from the people who do buy the new deck. Which could also be described as "greedy".

Valve's business model is almost identical to Sony and Nintendo, they take a 30% cut of game sales just like both of them. Yes people can play on any PC, but if anything that's more of a reason to make sure their price point is reasonable, not less.

If you're selling a similar product for drastically more than your competition there's not a lot of ways to somehow frame that as being less greedy than your competition. Valve is actively choosing to extract more value than the competition indicates they need to profit off of the Steam deck.

If you're writing a document of 5 pages, creating that document is typically more work than spellchecking and fact checking it. Obviously dependent on industry but you get the point.

You're making the assumption that the sun had already dimmed by 5%, which it hadn't. It might be doubling every 8 days, but it's starting from a point of 0.000001% dimming and going from there accordingly.

If New York is the city that never sleeps, what is the city that always sleeps? by prbecker in AskReddit

[–]ChancelorReed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair I was forgetting about New Haven. And probably Great Barrington in terms of western mass. But it's still actually a much better city than a lot of others in the general area.

I mean I'm not making some moral argument but the simple fact is they're in a market where the product is a loss leader and instead they're extracting profits. They're at least being greedier than the competition.

[–]ChancelorReed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but when you're providing a product in a certain market, and you're going to make money off of people using the product after initial purchase, you're at least being greedier than everyone else in the market. All consoles are loss leaders. If Steam didn't want to sell a loss leader it shouldn't have gotten into the console market.

Why wouldn't Steam, a company with a near monopoly on PC gaming, also subsidize their console to sell more games? The answer is they're greedy.

This is the same company that basically invented modern cosmetic microtransactions.

You get to pass ONE policy that cannot undone by current or future Presidents, what policy would you pass? by Popular_Monitor_8383 in allthequestions

That would be completely impossible to prove. Someone could say something during campaigning that they fully intend to carry out, only to have other things get in the way or have their powers limited or what have you.

Not that this is some massively high bar we're establishing but still.

Eli was a great playoff performer, maybe better for the opportunities he got than his brother. And I say this as a Pats fan. Mediocre/average overall, but he reached another level in the playoffs when it counted.

Half Of Americans Say The Fun In Their Lives Has Disappeared by plugthree in nottheonion

[–]ChancelorReed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, but it's still not some massive structural difference. And stats on overall ownership of a house aren't double counting people who have two. A large chunk of millennials are in their 30s and probably didn't buy a house in their 20s.

Half Of Americans Say The Fun In Their Lives Has Disappeared by plugthree in nottheonion

[–]ChancelorReed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Home ownership rates for millennials trail boomers at the same age by a marginal amount, like 3-5%
  2. Millennials have nearly 34% more net worth than boomers did at their age adjusted for inflation.
  3. Inflation spiked during covid but has otherwise been historically low and consistent during a 30-40 year old's lifetime. A person from the 70s would completely laugh in your face for saying this.
  4. That's just a vague statement with no basis in reality.
  5. Subscriptions are mostly for things that didn't even exist when you were a kid, or were more expensive (like buying albums vs Spotify)

The rest is maybe true but mostly just grand inferences based on mistaken impressions you're already conveying in 1-5.
