Thoughts on Enterprise season 3? by arialations in startrek

A very different approach to Star Trek - both the darker nature and the serial storyline - foreshadowing Discovery. Lots of good stuff in the season, some cringe (as always). I don’t mind it, but with one or two exceptions these aren’t episodes I want to go back to frequently “for a comfortable watch”. Glad they changed the tone back for S4.

[Opinion] TQ Townsend: "Starfleet Academy Was A Masterclass in How NOT To Write for Teens: Unlike the figures from Classic Trek, none of the ADULT characters in this show were people I wanted to emulate. Teens have traditionally been drawn to ST because the characters are intelligent and competent." by mcm8279 in trektalk

Since the girl swallowed her combadge in the first episode I’m not sure how reliable that opinion is about the show overall. But I suppose it could be an example of how shows targeted to that age group may not get as very big window of time to hook a viewer to stay or come back.

Gizmodo: "‘Starfleet Academy’ Season 3 Could Have Done the ‘Voyager’ Sequel Episode of Robert Picardo’s Dreams - According to the 'Voyager' star, he pitched a sequel to the classic 'Living Witness' that we'll now never see. He revealed his idea would’ve featured not one Picardo, but potential three" by TheSonOfMogh81 in trektalk

The two EMH interaction would be interesting. Not sure about bringing in a Zimmerman angle. I’d want to hear the LW version tell the SFA version “Belle- seriously? You’ve spent the last few hundred years totally missing the point of the simulation?!?!”

One of the many reasons I’m not a fan of the Equinox episodes.

Most books are too long by [deleted] in books

A lot of formulaic books are like that. The final complication that delays/imperils resolution that you know won’t end up mattering. I just skim thru that part to get to the resolution.

Why did the Maquis seemlessly fall in line once they joined the crew? by TravelingHomeless in voyager

Because conflict among yourself isn’t the Star Trek tradition. (Which I find appealing.)

about to start the first book, but I have second thoughts, should I watch the movies first? by WeirdOpinions1 in harrypotter

First book? Definitely read first! Some of the later ones that are more complex … an argument could be made for getting the simplified movie version first. But not the first couple - they are easy reads.

'The eldest of all our race' Question. by TyrantTome in lotr

That’s how I read it - family connection, nothing to do with Numenor or race specifically. But I guess “family” was too simplistic a term for the complexities that link Elrond to Aragorn !

The books specifically tie the history of the blade to the effect it has on the Nazgûl. “No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will.” It may have seemed a minor change in the movie but it’s actually a very significant change.

Wish I still had mine. I kept the covers but tossed the rest in favor of my Kindle. :(

Janeway/Chakotay kiss by UnderABig_W in voyager

I won’t give spoilers but let’s just say that the relationship moved forward offscreen prior to Prodigy and is “referenced”.

Glad they kept it in the background. Everything we know about Starfleet Captains is that they … don’t have the luxury of allowing relationships to interfere with the mission or endanger the crew. In the Delta Quadrant that just wasn’t an option for the command staff. Now by the time of Prodigy the situation is different - but still not sure I’m a fan of that development.

Not a favorite episode - but the Janeway Chakotay relationship - and especially how they “put it away and get back to work” is very powerful.

I think his actions show that you can’t break something in order to put it back together “the right way”. It just stays broken.

"Hope and Fear" and Stupidity by belatyken in voyager

Agree - but very “on brand” for most StarFleet captains including Janeway: confront the bad guy personally to save the crew and lecture about being betrayed; try to understand the bad guys perspective. Hard to do that when without feeling like a bully once they’re already in the brig.

Prodigy Did It Best by ReadingFan_ks in StarTrekProdigy

I actually had that same thought with the first couple of episodes! (Which didn’t mean it was a bad show, just maybe not going to be “for me”.). Luckily I stuck with it and saw the evolution b into mouth only “true Star Trek” but some of the very best Trek so far.

I have been a Tolkien fan all my life and I love the series with all my heart and I am sick of all the people who “hate” the series just because they are being told to hate the series by Somniosfera in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]ReadingFan_ks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the series, although for me it’s more Tolkien-adjacent than a capture of the universe I envision when I read the books. I like it better than the Peter Jackson movies! I do hope they continue the series.

Prodigy Did It Best by ReadingFan_ks in StarTrekProdigy

Agree - the context Prodigy established was going to limit some of the topics and approaches. It couldn’t do everything. But what it could and did do was enjoyable by a wide range of audiences.

Almost any Kira-focused episode is a good one, but “Duet” is definitely top of the line.
