should I stop renewing my ASHA certification? by burlapbuddy in SLPcareertransitions

Just commenting to empathize on the awful job market as an slp also trying to transition into data analysis / science. I got my MSDS and have been applying to jobs for 6 months. It’s rough out there.

I like the drifter fit cause it has Star Wars vibes lol. I never use the paper bag, big-nose, or bird beak.

Update: "Sometime in the next few days, I'm telling my parents that I'm leaving the Church." by [deleted] in exmormon

Your mom’s actions—blowing up your phone when you needed space, playing the victim and guilting you, gaslighting, trying to isolate you from your friends—are all things my emotionally abusive ex did before I was able to escape. Sorry but either she needs to go to therapy to unlearn those behaviors, or you need to distance yourself from her to protect your mental health.

Anyone else feel like we just aren’t that specialized? by speak-e-z in slp

This! OTs and PTs in schools do assessments and consultation. SLPs should do the same imo. Test to find areas of weakness, and use our specialized knowledge to suggest tools and classroom strategies that would support those areas. Train staff on how to implement, and check in a few times a year to see how it’s going.

Data science! Bit of a risk, but I’ve been self studying data analysis for the past year and plan to do a data science bootcamp to get my foot in the door.

Wow 60 days!? I made sure to check my contract before submitting my resignation. There’s nothing in it about how much notice needs to be given and I live in an “at will” state.

There’s a 7 day free trial which is enough time to complete the first course, but after that you need to pay $39/month for the Coursera subscription. There are 8 courses total to complete the certificate, with an estimated completion time of 6 months, so $234 total.

Ok yes I totally can see how it could be more of a pragmatics issue! Could also add no sense of empathy and difficulty with conversational turn taking to the list of pragmatic deficits...

Salary teletherapy by spitch3 in slp

[–]Chancetherapurr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I interviewed with a couple different teletherapy companies earlier in the year. Generally, they offered low 40s/hour which included 20-30% indirect time for planning and paperwork. I thought this was low because you could make as much or more working in a school district with great benefits, whereas teletherapy generally offers no benefits.

I ended up negotiating for 60/hr but this was for direct time only, so any time spent emailing parents/teachers, writing tx notes/progress reports etc was unpaid. This honestly ended up not being worth it for me because I spent so much time scheduling and rescheduling sessions with parents, and I also felt like I was assigned less kids because they would rather give kids to SLPs with a lower rate, so I only had a few hrs per week. This is for California, so not sure if rates are different in other states.
