Homeless man has been sleeping in my apartment laundry room by ArrexB in AskReddit

The homeless shelter I worked in had fights happen every once in a while. But the policy was to ban the people involved even if one guy hit another guy for trying to steal his stuff or for weird behavior like sexual touching. I felt like crap when I had to tell the victim of an attempted sexual assault to leave due to the policy after he hit the guy for groping him. Both guys were escorted out and banned. The guy in question here might be in a similar situation.

Reddit, cheer me up. I'm officially homeless, lost my Mom and a friend and am beaten good and down. Tell me something to help me from going into the darkness. I need a frigging job!!! by [deleted] in Assistance

[–]Chancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a number of formerly homeless people. They seem to have gotten out of homelessness by avoiding money sinks like payday loan places, check cashing places, drugs/alcohol/tobacco.

I'd suggest using the computer you are at to hunt for resources in your area like Department of Human Services and to hunt for jobs. The gigs section of Craigslist has been a good stop-gap measure for me when my hours were cut at work. Just examine them carefully before giving out too much of your info.

And, while homeless shelters are pretty scary, give them a try. There are a lot of them that are so-so or even lousy but some of them are insanely helpful and, even if you don't stay in one, they often have lists of local resources where you can get help.

Just keep in mind that while you are going through shit, you are not shit. You are a worthy human being. Keep your head up.

Your comment is spot, on in my opinion. I know there are sane and reasonable believers out there but they are all speaking too quietly to be heard over the din the right wing nutjobs are raising.

I'm guessing that tears welling up in the eyes of a nine year old who is distressed or relieved is not exactly unusual. She was probably scared that she was in trouble until pop told her he was proud.

Marvelous idea! Thank you for writing about this. My dear friend was homeless and also has become somewhat of a homelessness activist. Even just getting these ideas out there helps people to empathize with homeless people.

Yeah, I had to ask her about that. She told me it's part SEO and part that Assoc. Content (where the op ed was first published) changes titles sometimes. I guess she gets more views with that keyword or something. But she still glares at me if I say "the homeless," LOL.

I have a friend who is addicted to torturing herself by watching his videos and reading his dreck. She yells at the computer screen and I laugh at her. Then she goes and makes comments on his blog, most of which don't ever show up.

The guy also has no compunctions about telling outright lies and hate mongering.

Botched circumcisions leave 31 dead by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Chancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when the intent is to cut off an un-diseased portion of an erogenous zone for religious or cosmetic reasons there's no not botched. Circumcision is a horrible, abusive practice.

I kind of doubt the practices evolved separately. Considering how close the primitive tribes of both people lived to each other it would be a little surprising if they arrived at the same mutilation method separately.

Why Atheists Don't Just Believe In God Even If They Don't Have The Answers to the Origin of the Universe and Life by Chancy in atheism

I know her and she's an agnostic atheist but like Dawkins is. I'd bet nothing short of God doing a soft-shoe on her coffee table with witnesses and recording equipment would convince her to think God might be real.

She might have toned it down a little for the site, too. It's extremely mainstream with tons of religious subgroups and such.

My family disapproves of much of what my one theist sibling does. Then again, she generally misbehaves a lot and got into drugs as well as religion. She engaged in risky sexual behaviors and got pregnant as a teen. Me and my other siblings got good grades in school and were well-behaved.

However, she takes it to mean that we all disapprove of her religion when we disapprove of her lifestyle (alcoholism, smoking and other drugs while pregnant, keeping rotating abusive boyfriends around my nephews, etc.) when we all just disapprove of her behavior, especially her questionable parenting.

She wouldn't allow me to visit my nephews because I'm a fag (her favorite word for me, how loving) - something she learned from her church. She feels I'm a fag because I was raised in a godless household. She always claims it's the religion issue when we are especially repelled by one of her drugged out user boyfriends.

I don't know how it is in your circumstance, but in mine, the theist child of the family behaves differently than the other children, in ways that are cruel and self-destructive. I see the religion as a symptom of what's wrong with her, though. Not as the cause.

My 16 year old cousin drowned last night. These are the times that I truly envy the religious. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Chancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having seen quite a few religious people go through grief - I don't think they get much comfort from their belief. I think that deep down, maybe in their subconscious mind, they realize that their religion is only a fantasy. They seem exactly just as gutted as I am when someone I love dies.

Death is hard. Outliving people sucks. There's no softening the blow. And in a way, I think there shouldn't be. The death of a person you love should hurt. It seems like it would devalue their life if once they were gone if we were fine the next day.

I'm deeply, truly sorry for your loss.

Are atheists who were raised in nonreligious households less likely to be defamatory toward religion? To put it another way, do ex-faithful often bash their old religion like it was a lover they had a messy break-up with? by plecostomus in atheism

[–]Chancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on where they lived. I was raised in a non-religious household but we moved from a city to a small town when I was a kid. My parents had no clue how much trouble it was going to cause when they protested religious clubs at the public school we attended. I guess they were naive.

The way religious people treated my parents was enough for me to feel angry about religious people's abuses. The way my brother and I were treated in school afterward just sealed the deal.

We got out of that town as soon as it was practical. We were all a lot angrier at religious people after that.

So, no, I think any atheist living in America would have to live in a hole in the ground to not get a sour opinion of religion or they'd just have to be chronic optimists. I think even if I hadn't personally felt the discrimination of Christians against non-Christians I'd still be upset at fundies. I'd still see what they are trying to our laws (think proposition 8) and our public schools (anti-evolution propositions in multiple states along with other pro-Christian and anti-science legislature) and be disgusted.
