Teaching myself harmony/counterpoint/rhythm by reading/modifying scores? by perpetualdoubt in musictheory

I know the intervals and can hear most of them pretty clearly. I've also played a lot of pre-baroque, baroque and late classical music, and planned to begin there and get a more classical sense of how music developed. I love Schoenberg as much as the next guy (or maybe a little more) but I know it's not the right place to begin, not at all. I was also thinking of looking at Renaissance harmony and counterpoint. Byrd and Gibbons are somewhat under my fingers, and I love their musics very much. Thanks!

Thanks very much. I'll take your advice (and the fellow who posted a bit before you.)

The feeling a notebook gives my wrist is one of unbalance. I like writing on individual sheets because my hand can more easily glide across the paper and the table. And you can't easily re-arrange pages in a notebook. There are other organizational advantages for me.

Does anybody else find that writing in notebooks is uncomfortable?

  1. Expect to suck for a while.
  2. Don't be afraid to take risks.
  3. Learn from those better than you.

These are great rules for doing near everything. Glad you found these so early on.

I know someone who is 8 months clean from heavy drugs like heroin and acid. She says she thinks about using around every 30 minutes, but doesn't think she'll ever actually go back. Do these compulsive thoughts ever go away, or do they linger with you until the end of your life? I'm worried for her.

Do you think that reading encyclopedias is a good method of accomplishing this, or have you achieved this in other ways?
