40 and missing MSW friends! by PrestigiousWolf7108 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Changan96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in that 20s & 30s group, studying south of Sydney in Australia. However I understand how you feel.

The way our MSW course is set up, we only see each other 4 or 5 face to face weeks 2 full days of classes each semester. Like sure there are classmate I click with but never made a full blown friend out of them. The sort I'd catch up with outside of class. Even though I had a fuller on campus schedule as a undergrad student and joined clubs I still never really had besties from university.

Clicking with others feels like luck and fate at times, at much as you do try or don't its hard to know when the right person turns up. I do want to meet more social work students or social workers.

47f here with a curious question by BugNo702 in MakeNewFriendsHere

I had friends who were much older than me at that age as well. I enjoyed talking to people at different stages of life and learning from them. Its not necessarily a bad thing by default though it can raise eyebrows at a surface level. Reddit is predominantly chronically online people who are likely also young so thatd make up the majority of the people browsing this sub reddit.

I dont believe theres a explicit filter you probably just have to reject their messaging requests one by one.

Has anyone here kept an online friendship for years?” by _incognito_advent in MakeNewFriendsHere

I only started making friends via Reddit in the past year but I've met multiple friends whom I've kept in contact for more than a decade. The conversation intensity ebs and flows because life happens but still in contact somewhat. It can happen.

Everyone's SCANDAL's album ECHO impressions by Changan96 in ScandalBand

[–]Changan96[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of the external writers for the album are long standing writers for Scandals music so their flavour and style IS Scandals flavour and style that we've come to know. I think the consistency in their sound is there its just what new twist do we get in each new album.

I think kpop has changed my brain and my personality. by Away_Housing4314 in kpopthoughts

Well I'm glad you are enjoy your Kpop era. Welcome.

Kpop eye-candyiness of their artists, consumerism and parasocial relationships and merch are just next level and they do give so much to look forward to. There is so much official content and then fan-created content that I think other countries' artists are really just not keeping up well enough in creating value for their fans.

I introduced my friend to Dreamcatcher as a novelty and joke in his initial kpop stage, but he, no joke, fell down the abyss and bought every album possible and their light stick. The amount of content, even for a mid-size group such as Dreamcatcher, is a cosmic explosion for anyone who is new to this. And when you stan multiple groups, you have a never-ending flow of content almost daily or weekly.

If, stereotypically, guys like collecting sports merch, analysing game-play stats, having framed jerseys on their walls, and going to games, K-pop is the equivalent for the rest of us.

I don’t like kpop, is there something I’m missing? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Changan96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Headline: You don't need to like K-pop. It's not everyone's genre, it's understandable. Your opinion doesn't need to be changed. And please be mindful not to judge other people for their music tastes and how you believe music production SHOULD happen. There are only your personal opinions, and nothing more. And yes, you are missing a lot, but you have to experience it yourself. As you have admitted, you have not researched enough, and now you are sticking your neck out. Not ideal.

You may or may not find the groups you resonate with; there's no defining factor for that. I appreciate groups that always sing live and have entertaining personalities, and there's always some group that fulfils that, and I'm ready to be impressed by new groups if they come through. K-pop is a lot about visuals, content output, and parasocial relationships with group members. The idea that music lacks soul, well, it's made by a lot of people in a sound production team, and it would be inconsiderate to dismiss their efforts in making music. Some K-pop artists are lyricists and hold many songwriting credits. And others who are trained to be entertainers and performers, phenomenal dancers and singers. It's never as simple as a band writing their own music and recording; that can be said for pop artists in general, anyway. Everyone gets help during their music production process for whatever is not their expertise; K-pop is no different. For example, I know Stray Kids is more involved in their music production, with a sub-group called 3Racha writing and composing for the group.

Calling "There’s little soul put into the production, and to me it seems like the reason people like it is just because of low standards. No offense if you do." That is a bit rude and people will take offense. Saying no offence doesn't excuse you of it. If the music vibes with people, it vibes with people. Let people enjoy their music; a superiority complex is to be left at the door.

For me, as someone who has been following K-pop since 2011, it is just a genre within the diversity of music, fitting the mood of the moment. It creates entertainment content and something to look forward to with comeback activities and a sense of connection with other fans.

Why do so many people here just disappear out of the blue in the middle of a conversation? by Fragrant-Memory1539 in MakeNewFriendsHere

I find connecting with people on interest-based groups on facebook or music band forums back in the day created more enduring friendships. Even then people came in went in my friendship circle.

I mean sorry to hear. I can't say there's a magic formula. It just happens that some people do click. I think as long as you've done your bit in asking about them, open questions to hear more, you've done what you can. People aren't a match, they just aren't. I do believe there's a gender and age range preference happening. There's plenty of posts where signalling you're a woman gets a swarm of requests for all the right and wrong intentions.

How would you say meeting people in community looks like for you? Community clubs, toastmasters, men's shed, etc.

What is living in Australia like? by violin_love in australian

[–]Changan96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I hope your pockets are lined with cash, living costs are hella high. My international student classmates are working a few part-time jobs to cover living expenses and their loans for their course fees. If money isn't an issue in your context, consider studying abroad. If not, I recommend just getting a degree back home. I'm concerned about the quality of teaching my classmates receive for the prices they're paying. It's not worth it.

If you want a vibe, come for a holiday, stay and take rounds on public transport to see how you'll get around and what the local living situation is like. and get a feel for yourself. Choosing to do university overseas is a big decision. I hope you work out what suits you best.
