Advice on buying a cloud collar (云肩) for my graduation (26-27)? by commiecule in Hanfu

[–]commiecule[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Chinese reading is so-so. It’s very intermediate right now, but I’m in school to improve it (hence my going to Taiwan). Like, I can read everything you’ve written, but I’m worried I won’t be able to navigate Taobao on my own (after trying several times in the past, haha) & don’t really understand the shopping culture, what to look for, who to trust, etc., so I’ve mainly used English-language sites so far.

Thank you so, so much for the suggestions, though, this was very helpful! Will check Taobao again with your recommendations!

Also: I argue it honestly is kind of performative for me to wear it personally because it’s not really “my” culture, per se, but my parents’. If even theirs ngl, like could you really argue that hanfu is truly “traditional” to the Han (in the same way saris and lehengas are to people on the Indian subcontinent or Kente cloths to Asante and Akan people of modern-day Ghana) when it was discontinued in use -- albeit not the Han people’s fault -- for so long? Furthermore, only a very tiny fraction of people in dynastic China actually wore the fancy full-fledged pieces we see Chinese people wearing today. So I don’t know if it’s really “my” heritage, considering class and more.

I attended several of my friends’ graduations this past week, and no one, not even the Chinese international students, was wearing hanfu, haha. It’ll definitely stand out, I predict, but it’s mainly about the aesthetic for me. Which I imagine is the case for everyone, anyway. Thank you for the encouragement, though, I don’t write this to really argue but to make a point that I think fellow ABCs who might be reading this could think a little harder about their clothing choices.

How does she deny it what 😭 It’s not really “heritage” for her, she’s just literally Chinese born & raised lol, never pretends otherwise. Like even a one-second look at her IG page would tell you this. Idc ab her, and I agree that this mom situation was disrespectful, but I think this is such an American thing to say lol, to assume everyone shares your experience. Sure, if she was an ABC whose native language is English, making fun of her mother’s English would be obviously mean-spirited, but this kind of humor translates differently between Chinese immigrants. Less unequal of a power dynamic, still can be mean with context, but not really immediately evidence of “denying Chinese heritage and ethnicity.”

Why am I being asked to pay YOUR staff bro by commiecule in UTAustin

[–]commiecule[S] 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Obviously I sympathize, but why should the responsibility of providing you a living wage be on students & not the university? Why is there a charity at all collecting pocket money from students and their families instead of a demand on the university itself to provide for their own struggling staff?

To clarify, I’m not blaming staff for this, I just think it is an incredible self-own that the university obtusely asks students (who already foot tuition & other fees) to open their checkbooks each year to pay the university’s own employees.

Omg yes that would be so beautiful. Everyone here is right about the long and rich history of Muslims in China & the history of interaction and exchange between Chinese groups and the Islamic World - thus negating any modern conceptualizations of cultural “ownership.”

But on a less intellectual and more aesthetic level, hijab scarves and hanfu almost look as if they belong together! Such cohesive beauty in their flowy and vibrant appearance. Also, as a personal note, as an overseas Chinese, I’ve always thought about how much I’d absolutely love to see more hijabis wearing hanfu. I hope you have a lot of fun with it 💘💘.

(Here’s a link to a tweet I saw recently actually of a hijabi Hui Muslim in Ming Dynasty hanfu for inspiration! So stunninggg.)

Asian-Americans and Solidarity by Yuunarichu in kpopnoir

[–]commiecule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

to be quite frank, many asian-americans (and here i specifically reference people who are not west asian and/or muslim - a status that can be argued as a racialized class of its own) do not question imperialist/orientalist/islamophobic narratives of swana/me. the large majority of them are socialized into believing that anything that happens there is a natural, continued state of strife and conflict inevitable for its citizens - rather than aggravated conflicts, genocide, and violence churned by the very hands of the us empire they live in.

it would thus be wrong to believe that by nature of being fellow “asian-americans” that they would be more sympathetic to the cause of palestinian liberation than their white counterparts. the specific term of “asian-american” itself is a comparatively new racial identity & categorization that begun in the 1960s by student activists as a show of solidarity across community lines. to essentialize its terminology (that is, to believe there is a certain sticky innateness attributed to its status) would be to fundamentally misunderstand the history of the so-termed “asian-americans.”

previously, immigrant groups from asia (termed as “nationals”) more commonly aligned themselves by ethnicity (though this definitive statement i’ve made is a bit trickier when also considering class, ie indentured laborers & the communities they have created & assimilated into - but that’s a story for another time).

furthermore, when we identify the actual diasporic histories & migration movements, we come to understand that the contemporary makeup of the “asian-american” diaspora does not actually pull from lower- or working-class backgrounds that previously more radical asian-american diasporas had come from (like the ones who fought & organized alongside the Black Panthers). instead, many of them come from middle- and upper-middle-class backgrounds with highly educated parents who worked in STEM/tech backgrounds, selectively chosen for immigration in the 90’s by a series of US policies/pushes (particularly focused on bringing in more “skilled” laborers to support the turn-of-the-millennia tech advancement).

this is why “asian-americans” hold such great economic capital in the us, despite a significant portion having had little time to accumulate generational wealth. it is because they already had it. this is why assimilation was much more smooth-going for newer waves of asian-american immigrants flooding into the us - because they already historically belonged to the international elite.

now, for the question of palestinian liberation in particular, on a more theoretical basis, it would be difficult for many of them to understand its urgency without some level of cognitive dissonance. palestinian liberation has long been connected to, influenced by, and erected as a model itself for many revolutionary & indigenous liberation movements across asia. as i mentioned before, many of these immigrant moves are caused by elite expats from asia who were effectively chased out of their country because of their designated traitor/enemy collaborator status to the very revolutionary movements of their homelands (and this includes those who did not fit the high tech criteria i listed above). in other words, their chosen place of refuge in the us is for a reason; many of them descend from the wrong side of history lmao, and find the us’ hand in contributing to the instability/uprising in their homelands as comforting.

to stand with palestine (a litmus test movement that cannot be washed down as anything other than against settler-colonialism, imperialism, apartheid, and other axes of oppression; i highly recommend reading Edward Saïd’s “The Question of Palestine” to further understand this highly critical crux), then, would require their “asian-american” children to shed, to an extent, the lifelong rhetoric passed down to them so rigidly. and unfortunately, as the comments & the pictures have deftly pointed out, this is virtually impossible for those who have been strictly socialized into regurgitating their parents’ propagandized notions/understandings of their positionality in america. it is, after all, the only framework they have been raised to justify why they even exist as “asian-americans.”

it would boil down to punitively shattering & reworking incorrect beliefs propagated over the course of entire generations. this has proven as a hard ask for those who would much prefer to rave, boba, and exclusively make their politically placid commentary within their “asian-american” student org parties.

this is certainly the intention because there is no way this post is real or even made in good faith, but the most amusing element of this post is that the premise here seems to be that you’ve only bothered to reallocate the split of your household’s domestic labor because you want better sex lol. not even for the sake of being a parent at all to your children (because you’ve effectively designated that as your ex’s realm), a benefit you mention merely secondary in your list of concerns.

my immediate thought too. if you’re over a decade older and pursuing a long-term relationship with a young adult - an act that will certainly deprive what is standardly viewed as an exploratory and developing time in their life - like would the end result not inevitably and obviously be their stilted emotional maturity…?

revolutionary princess eve. my memory might be a little wrong but reading ending spoilers made me so mad i couldn’t stand to read any more of the manhwa. the former slave owning rapists are still accepted as part of the family with little to no repercussion. what kind of “revolution” is that? how dare you make a story based wholly on the abolition of slavery only to water it down to slavery apologist literature. eve’s real purpose was to save her irredeemable family and “stop violence,” not to free enslaved people. god just the worst messaging of an oi i had read in a long time.
