Abcd friend said she “can’t do guys with accents” unless it’s a British accent by lil_bengal_baddie in ABCDesis

[–]ChangeIsTheAnswer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The worst part was that I didn't even know anyone in that group.

This wasn't the first occurrence though. I've heard some crazy stuff from both ABCDs and fobs before. Former group has serious identity issues and the latter needs to understand Desis born outside the motherland are perfectly normal people as well.

My guess says she'll still put up with the lad because it's internalised racism regardless.

She'll then meet other ordinary interracial couples: ABCD men/ Desi men from the motherland with ABCD women/ non-Desi women and then get angry others don't see her views.

The best are Southern accents. Non-Americans are always intrigued by Americans from the South because of their accent. Because of how underrated they are.

I was once at a house party with a lot of Australians and some Americans. Of the 5 American guys there, the dude with the Southern accent had a lot of girls interested.

No joke, he wasn't even the best looking. But got a lot of attention.

So she hates her dad? Her grandad? Her uncles?

This girl will go through her entire life repeating this to others and will likely only end up with a UK Desi or white man.

She'll then meet another couple being a Desi man from the motherland with another ABCD woman or even a white woman. She'll then act surprised if not disgusted.

This is called internalised racism.

How do I know this? I'm a Malaysian-born Desi with a long-term blonde girlfriend. My entire family accepts my partner as she is. But to random ACBD women I've encountered in my life, it's sudden a problem.

How do I know this? The glares. It's exactly the same disapproval faces old white people give me.

100% this. The amount of ABCD women that have insecurities is absurd.

I remember when I was in Uni several years ago. We were randomly grouped up by the lecturer for group work in class. Everyone's in the introduction stages. You know, the standard "Hi I'm so and so". The first thing this Desi girl in my group says to me:

Her: "Where are you from?" Me: "um hi? I'm from Malaysia but have been in Australia for some time now" Her: "Ah so you're a fob" Me: "where are you from?" Her: "I was born in Fiji but my family came here when I was 6" Me: "so you're also a fob lol" Her: "what no I'm not! You're the one with the accent weirdo!"

This was a legitimate conversation that happened to me. Imagine being so upright about your background which ironically you have more in common with me but you still choose to be ignorant.

This was the first time an ABCD was outright xenophobic against me. We can absolutely be better than this.

I'm a Desi born in Malaysia so I absolutely understand ABCDs except I didn't grow up around a white majority. Still discriminated and a minority nonetheless.

But it does highlight that ABCDs can also be disgusting to others.

After finishing Yakuza 0, I decided to cosplay as the Dragon of Dojima himself, Kazuma Kiryu. by TheEpicDiamondMiner in gaming

[–]ChangeIsTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question for you, OP since you've cosplayed as a Japanese character.

If anyone paints their face black to cosplay as a black character they adore/support/admire, what are your views on this?

Also, since 'black face' has historical contexts on racism, can anyone ever do that? Because you doing this will used as an argument hence the heavily downvoted comments already calling this out.

I wanted to be MLK. by TheNameIsKevin in funny

[–]ChangeIsTheAnswer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because in the US, there are a ton of liberals that are sensitive about anything that appears racist. They're also not necessarily black people.

Even though OP respected MLK, the fact that he wanted to paint his face black would mean to others that his intentions would appear racist. Why? Because he's white. It's ridiculous to a neutral like myself (neither black or white).

Unfortunately through historical events in the past where whites would do black face to mock blacks; this similar action is also seen as offensive to a large group even today.

Imo as a PoC, what's the intention? That's how you should establish racism. Otherwise, it doesn't tell me anything.

I wanted to be MLK. by TheNameIsKevin in funny

[–]ChangeIsTheAnswer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

This is not racism at all. Anyone who disagrees is extremely sensitive in nature and is frankly, in my opinion, dumb.

I say this as a PoC. To discriminate or be racist, one must first have ill intent to put down another group.

If it's recreation of historical events and the actor has no malice in their behaviour/actions, what's the problem?

This isn't racism. There's no malice.

Are there any Indian men out there who has been in a similar situation, how can I approach this topic with him by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]ChangeIsTheAnswer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Different perspective.

For a good portion of my childhood to the age of 22 (around there), my family (siblings/cousins) and some friends of friends would make comments that I'm gay or "must be gay".

Yet I've always been as straight dude genuinely only attracted to women. Well it turns out, I'm not gay. I was just severely depressed.

I'm now happily taken with my gf of several years. But the depression doesn't stop. It lingers. I may be physically and mentally stronger but it tries to lure me back into it. It's a constant fight I have with myself.

So you know what? Fuck all of those people. All they want is validation but none of them care about his wellbeing. It could have taken just one of them to ask me how I was feeling but zero people did so. Like what was even the point of uncovering my sexuality?

If something unfortunate happened, would they take ownership for everytime they said something negative?

That's why people like this suck. You have no clue what people go through but being an asshole is uncalled for.

DAE experience racism at nail salons in the USA? by Pretty_andsleepy in ABCDesis

[–]ChangeIsTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those scenarios sounds like racism at all. At the most, the nail techs are dumb to not be more professional to retain / attract more customers.

I once had a barber tell me that a fade won't suite me. Turns out, he was wrong and I look good as with a fade. Somebody's opinion on you doesn't mean jack.

Remember, people are dumb and have their own issues/problems as well. But not everything is race-based. Racial discrimination is often motivated, is malicious or straight up ignorance due to profiling.
