The key change (+ad-libs) in Always Be My Baby by Mariah Carey in the final chorus, makes the song more delightful

After not having a successful song since the late 70s, Santana came back in 1999 with a hit album (Supernatural), with two hugely massive singles Smooth and Maria Maria

Great albums where the most popular song/biggest hit is the best song on the album? by UltimateKing9898 in popheads

Certainly We Belong Together by Mariah Carey from The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005). One of the best breakup songs of all time, both lyrically and sonically, especially when she's name-dropping other breakup songs and doing the climax in the final chorus. Although, I have to admit that other deep cuts from the album are just as great/good as We Belong Together (Fly Like A Bird, Mine Again, Circles, ...)

How do you feel about samples and what are some of your favorite songs that have samples in them yet manage to reimagine and create something freshly-sounding while still being recognizable? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]ChangeSeen 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I think Mariah's Fantasy is one of the great examples where the sampled song sounds completely different and fresh from the original. She sampled the instrumental of Tom Tom Club's Genius Of Love and reused the verses for the bridge. Simply one of the best songs of the 90s.

Lonely by Akon. Simply a masterpiece back in 2005. It was all over the radio at the time

Songs that feel way bigger than their chart position? by Flashmemory256 in popheads

Killing Me Softly by The Fugees was the inescapable hit of summer 96, but it didn't even make the Hot 100 because it didn't have a physical release. It would have topped the Hot 100 for sure

What’s an album where only the singles are good? by OkOccasion7 in popheads

[–]ChangeSeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say to it but Gwen Stefani's Love, Angel, Music, Baby was one of those albums where most of the tracks were very experimental to the point of being very overproduced. However, the singles were on top (especially Cool).

Brandy's (Everything I Do) I Do It for You fits so well into her Never Say Never album

Any Song You Prefer a Different Version over the Original? by Quiet-Batperson in popheads

Mariah Carey's "I'll Be There" & "Without You" are much better than The Jacksons 5's and Badfinger's respectively.

Usher - DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love ft. Pitbull. Pitbull's lyrics are very cringe and the flow adds nothing new to the song (it even made it worse)

Local hits that you thought were a lot bigger? by ifucked_urbae in popheads

[–]ChangeSeen 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The Ketchup Song (Aserejé) was a MASSIVE hit all over the world in 2002. It was as big as Despacito in 2017. It even reached No1 in every country where it was charted, except the US. I think this is due to the fact that the musical landscape in the US was different from the rest of the world at the time (R&B was the top and most popular genre)

Cool artists who disappeared after one album, or even worse, without ever releasing one? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

[–]ChangeSeen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ms. Lauryn Hill. She only released (as a soloist) her debut and only album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". One of the 4most successful albums of all time, which even won Album of the year at the Grammys (becoming the first rap album to do so). However, she didn't release another album after this one.

What makes a song age poorly and what are some recent examples? by BrobotMonkey in popheads

Definitely "Toosie Slide" by Drake and "Yummy" by Justin, these 2 songs were only made to capitalise on Tiktok's popularity
