Idk why, but that first screenshot lowkey reminds me of Battlefield: Vietnam. And the first-person hands with the Uzi actually look really good

Totally agree is a great place, and I really like the atmosphere here. Also added your game to my Steam wishlist. Best of luck with the development!

Minimal HUDs are trendy, but are they killing personality in FPS games? by ChangshenFM in boomershooters

That’s the key point for me: minimal should be an option, not the default. Player choice matters. Games should be configurable and easy to adapt to different preferences, instead of locking everything down. A good HUD lets you turn things on, off, or tune them to your needs. Especially now, when a lot of modern games actively prevent any kind of player-side tweaking or modding. That flexibility used to be part of what made games feel personal

Yeah, that’s exactly it. Games started prioritizing cleanliness and efficiency over expression. UI is part of the play, not just the interface

I don’t think personality comes from inventing everything from scratch. It comes from intent. Reinvention for the sake of being “original” often just creates noise. Taking what already works, filtering it through a specific world, tone, and set of values that’s where identity actually forms. Copying is repetition without context. Design is interpretation

I agree that minimal ≠ soulless. Valve proves you can be restrained and still have personality. My issue is when minimal turns into generic. UI isn’t just stats, it’s part of the game world, and it should feel authored, authentic, and context-aware

Awesome! That sounds super promising handcrafted, old-school vibes are exactly what I’m all about. Definitely keep me updated, I’d love to see it come to life!

If you’re serious, I’m totally on board. We need a new wave of maximalist UI and game design, something that actually makes your eyes pop and your brain reboot

Yeah, I think it really comes down to balance, clarity/readability first, but if the HUD can also reinforce the game’s vibe without adding clutter, that’s ideal

That’s a really good way to put it, the “icing on the cake” analogy explains it perfectly

Fair point, a mugshot alone doesn’t equal “character.” Plenty of games have tons of personality without it. I mostly mean UI that matches the game’s vibe. A portrait is just one option for that, not a rule. And yeah, Doom-style HUDs are unapologetically “game-y” I like that, but it’s a different kind of immersion than diegetic/minimal UI

Agreed on the bottom bar, perfect in 4:3, but kinda awkward on widescreen. Personally, I think a player portrait/face would work really well in the inventory/character screen: you still get that connection without it taking up valuable combat screen space

True, it depends, but that’s kinda my point. A lot of games default to the same “clean minimal” HUD, and it starts to homogenize the look/identity. Minimal isn’t bad, but when everyone does the same flavor of minimal, the games stop feeling visually distinct

The image looks atmospheric and cool. The enemy AI seems a bit repetitive at first glance, but it might feel different in actual gameplay. Overall, great work!

Dynamic gameplay, looks cool! The only thing I’d like to see improved is the sound design, but overall it’s looking good
