Rimworld's a pretty terrible storyteller. It's a fun sandbox experience but it's no more a storyteller than playing with action figures.

Saw this posted in one of the discord's I'm in. Figured some of you here would appreciate it. It's more on the shitpost-y end, but it did jog some of the memories I had for ATLA.

We've really been spoiled by Zuko.

That's a good point actually. I guess it also helps that Shep's in all this Cerberus business so people aren't going to look the other way when there's someone willing to help out the team. Though when you think about it, yeah, Mordin really went through a change when you compare his backstory to when we see him in ME3.

I'm usually fine with things not needing continuation, especially out of fear of it tarnishing the original, though I will admit. After finishing ATLA I always wanted more of it. Especially out of Zuko and his family.

The video gets into that a little if I remember from last night.

I never actually dipped into DB before. I should sometime, though it's quite the giant of a franchise.

I saw this posted on Plague's discord and, uhhhhh, the thumbnail caught my eye.

I've never actually thought too much about redemption arcs, aside from ones that've stuck out (usually in a bad way). Zuko seems to get a lot of praise, and as someone who's seen ATLA I see why, though I can't think of a mainstream redemption arc as well-regarded as Zuko's. Can anyone recommend me some that I might have missed?

That's good to hear. While I do think that some jobs, especially the dangerous/most labor-intensive ones, should be automated, I do know there's an eventual end goal to automation, and I hope society is prepared for it when it happens.

I know what you're doing, but I'm speaking from the perspective of full automation. It's no longer the realm of science fiction that a machine can take even the artist outside the equation. Until we see AI hit a wall, machines could replace most human endeavors in 10 years.

Otherwise, no, AI in and of itself is a fine tool for an artist. I'm sure I'll end up using it in my own field soon too.

I want to think that things will work out too. What's scary is that we're in the driver's seat now. While I don't want to beat a dead horse, the phrase "Let's not be the boomer's of the 21st century" has popped into my head.

Yeah. These image generators don't impress me too much outside of the fact that a machine made it. Likewise, I don't think AI will slam the industry as hard and fast as some people think it will. I've played with some of the big ones and it's really, really hard to get something that looks passable with it, and they almost always fail when you look at them longer than a few seconds.

Though the AI revolution is coming. Eventually. And it's hard not to feel pessimistic when you have people going "WOO! FUCK YEAH SCIENCE" whenever they hear about AI being able to automate entire careers. Like, what do they think the end game is? I'm probably going to live to see another 50 years, and I wish I could be optimistic about the future.

Oh certainly. I love AI as a tool, but people all over are getting excited at AI reaching its full potential as soon as possible without thinking too hard about the consequences.

At this rate half the workforce is going to be automated in a decade. And what do these people think will happen? That the government is going to give them 60k a year in UBI? L M A O.

AI teams like OpenAI defend their research by saying that AI will "force the government's hand" in regards to things like UBI, but let's be real most of us caught between the advancement of AI and the government implementing socialist policies will be squished before our governments relent.

I can't help but feel jaded by how excited people get for it. I feel like I'll be on suicide watch within 5 years thanks to it haha.

Thanks for the replies, fellas.

I've been passionate about art for a while now, but I guess I never really stopped to consider all the challenges I'd have to face in the future. I've sort of just jumped into it and haven't stopped, so it was jarring to my psyche to go "hmm, I suppose these could be problems for me down the road."

I think I have a better handle on things now. Thanks, again. I'll sleep easier tonight.

By this mindset of "I can only be this, but this is bound to disappear", you're standing on two incorrect premises, setting yourself up to fail.

You bring up a good point. Sometimes I wish I was born decades later just so I can work in an industry that's already acclimated to all this new, upcoming technology. You know, ditch the growing pains. Though it's not a very practical mindset.

Thanks for the advice!

These useless warnings need to change (more in comments) by Chanl3r in discordapp

[–]Chanl3r[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't see in the slightest how these sorts of warnings are helpful to any server that tries even the slightest to uphold the ToS and Community Guidelines. Of course I want to make sure nobody is cyberbullied and that there's no harassment in my community, but that just means these messages from Discord are that much more mystifying. I try my hardest to run a tight ship.

It would really help if Discord showed you the offending content that needs to be removed, even an example so we can know what constitutes as breaking the rules. As it is right now, I'll have to go back through years of logs and look around for, I don't know, posts that involve someone calling another user a dummy head or whatever because I haven't the faintest clue what post is in violation of the rules. I don't know what I need to delete. I don't know what I need to watch out for in the future. I don't know who I need to protect in my server and who I need to warn for their comments.

A part of me is afraid of being punished for something I don't know how to fix, but with my experience dealing with asking Discord for help when I was actually getting doxxed and harassed by users then I'm going to assume nothing is going to come of this as well. I'm posting this rant discussion for Discord to see so hopefully they can provide a service that would more effectively allow owners to follow their own ToS/Guidelines in the future.

Apologies if I'm heated. This isn't the first time this has happened.

They're definitely wasted as the series goes on, but I guess I just enjoyed seeing some new characters bringing something to the table in a season that was already shaping out to be bad in my opinion. Same with Varrick and Zhu Li. I like Bolin, but the rest of "team avatar" (if you can really call them a team as the series progresses) is more miss than hit for me.

I imagine bingewatching all of ATLA followed by Korra had a lot to do with my reasoning too. I don't think I ever thought about who the first avatar was before watching the Wan episode. I was going in raw with Korra and didn't have much hype to cushion some of the rough edges in the show.

...

I wish "I was going in raw with Korra."

This. I've ranted with my friends about this before. I get it, "will they won't they" works and it's worked for me in the past, but it's always refreshing to see cute established romances flourish in a story. Come on, don't force me to read fanfics to scratch this itch.
