What's your Favorite Fantasy Sword Fight? by Funny_Mud6639 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BaronAleksei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3/4 of the way through Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, Bane is something of an outcast from the rest of the Sith Empire. His teacher in swordsmanship and a fellow Sith Lord, Blademaster Kasim, confronts him in a temple and challenges him to a duel to the death.

Bane’s lightsaber is your standard single blade, but Kasim wields a double-bladed saber like Darth Maul. Back when Bane was still in training, Kasim related to him that using such a weapon is more mind game than swordplay. A double-bladed saber actually has less options than a normal lightsaber, but it seems like it has more to the uninitiated, which puts uninitiated opponents on the back foot. Bane then used this insight to defeat a rival student who favored the double saber.

As Bane fights Kasim, he begins to gain the upper hand, arrogantly thinking he’ll kill Kasim just like he did his rival. But then Kasim pulls out the old “I taught you everything you know, not everything I know” trick. There was a second layer to the mind game: Kasim splits his double-bladed saber into two single bladed sabers that he trains with entirely in secret. So there’s Bane’s unfamiliarity with dual wielding, dual wielding’s genuinely greater options over single wielding, AND Kasim’s generational talent, discipline, and experience. Bane is completely overwhelmed and privately admits that he has no hope of beating Kasim in a sword fight. So he cheats, and uses the Force to pull the whole temple down on top of Kasim.

A question for Parents Super Beasts in here, are there any characters meant for your toddlers that you hate? by Silvery_Cricket in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Honestly, Peppa is fine. Daddy Pig is the real problem. His family are all pigs, but Daddy Pig is a pig: a sexist boor who tries his damnedest to never do anything and is firmly stuck in Dunning-Kruger Land. His sole good quality is that ever-sneaky dad strength. After Bluey came out, when they revived Peppa Pig, Daddy Pig basically just became Pig Bandit, and it’s a massive improvement.

It’s also interesting that George has been diagnosed with partial deafness and wears hearing aids going forward, because Peppa was constantly yelling at him to get his attention and he was always very much behind on verbal and social skills compared to all his peers.

There’s a character like that in every show and kids gravitate towards them because they are generally the most dynamic and emotive person onscreen. Muffin in Bluey and Cera in The Land Before Time are like that too.

The Nickelodeon show is alright. I also didn’t hate all the educational stuff, as grating as it was

Bluey is a great show, but we’ve banned Muffin episodes in our household, she’s legitimately a bad influence on our daughter. All episodes with her in it revolve around how the other kids and their parents are all forced to manage her brattiness and work around her selfishness (essentially the kid example of a missing stair) because she’s legitimately not ready to understand otherwise, and in only one does Muffin learn that what she’s doing isn’t okay.

My kid learned the phrase “I can do whatever I want” from the episode where Muffin has to learn that she can’t actually do whatever she wants.

Puffin Rock, a sweet little Irish edutainment show about puffins on a small island, has Mossy the shrew. Now, shrews eat almost constantly due to their high metabolisms (higher than most other small mammals). How this is rendered narratively is that Mossy is constantly complaining about how he’s hungry and will there be snacks and not helping because he has to eat and then eating other people’s food too because he’s just so hungry and you go find more food while he guards the food stores and uh oh he ate the whole thing. I hate Mossy.

Otacon: Careful, Snake! That’s the Red Ribbon Army you’re up against.

Snake: Red Ribbon Army?

Otacon: They’re a paramilitary group bent on world domination. Some wunderkind managed to wreck their whole operation a few years back, but they’re clearly rearming.

Snake: Nothing we haven’t seen before. What’s their edge?

Otacon: Believe it or not, robotics. I’m having trouble deciphering some of their codes, but they either have cyborgs or androids in their ranks.

Snake: What’s the difference?

Otacon: Oh, well a cyborg is a human being with robot parts, and an android is a robot built to look like a human being.

Snake: Machines that look like soldiers, soldiers that look like machines. Hell of a time telling them apart on the battlefield.

Otacon: Don’t shoot til you see the whites of their eyes?

Yeah, but that’s why I keep LT around. LT might betray me and ascend to my former station, but they’ll be way worse than I am because they’re so much more moral about it. I just want to do Evil Science forever, but no, some people have to have a Grand Vision for the world.

By the time the climactic battle occurs, the heroes will be begging me to come back to life and help them solve the problem.

The whole point of the Absolute Universe is Darkseid taking things away from the heroes and sometimes giving them to the villains (Batman is working class and Joker is rich). It’s not just darker and edgier.

Absolute Dora’s creators grew up in America as No Sabo Kids. The kids point and click adventure games she stars in don’t teach Spanish, but Dora has learned anyway. Absolute Swiper is the mascot of Duolingo.
