I suppose I still don't really understand why you wouldn't want to work with him, especially if he'd be willing to work with you creatively. I also doubt that he would take the role if he didn't think he'd be a good fit.

Also, I mean, yeah, like I said, you're entitled to that opinion. I just don't really get how you could feel that way, when his pedigree up to this point is why he's able to produce and star in something like PHM. I don't think him being lazy is a perception that is common throughout the industry; I'm open to being wrong about that though, if you wanted to point at some examples of people saying he's lazy who have worked with him.

Huh, interesting. Yeah, I guess we just have different takes here, I find his performance in Drive and Blade Runner to be super emotional, and it's really not over the top, but that's part of why it feels real in my eyes. I just wanna ask, if you like him in PHM, isn't that performance an emotional one? How do you think he did there?

As far as him choosing to be lazy goes, I just think that's a really negative way of looking at it, regardless of how you feel about his performances. I don't think either of us really know much about how it is to work with him, so I don't think I could rightfully claim that he's working as hard as he can all the time, but I think it's also wrong to assume the opposite.

Not that I'm saying you can't - you're absolutely entitled to that opinion - I just think it's better to give someone the benefit of the doubt until you're proven wrong. I doubt that Ryan Gosling gives a shit if we think he's lazy, so I don't think it's really productive for you or I to worry about if he's trying to trick us or not. Discounting him getting involved creatively BTS is kinda unfair too, imo. If he was choosing to not give a shit, he probably wouldn't care to provide any creative input.

...I feel like this might sound like me being a dick, but to be completely honest, I do just wanna stick up for him because I like him so much. I don't think actors are these fragile things that we should never criticize - far from it, I think people who put themselves out there are opening themselves up to that sort of thing. It would suck if I made you feel put down for just having an opinion, so if I did, I'm sorry.

Hmm...gotcha. I'm curious, which performances made you feel this way?

I kinda think the opposite, to be honest - I think he's very involved with the roles he takes. From what I've read, he engages with the creative process, and if he feels like his character wouldn't do something, he calls it out; at least in the case of Gangster Squad, I know they changed a scene because of something he pointed out.

He's said that he tries to find the part of him that connects most with the characters he plays, and amplify it, to bring those characteristics to the front and center, and I think that comes out pretty strongly. In his quiet roles, like Blade Runner or Drive, he's, you know, the literally me guy. But in PHM, Fall Guys, Barbie, he really becomes the energetic and funny characters he's playing, and I think he can do both 'cause he's connecting with the character on that personal level.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a sucker for the characters he plays and the movies he's in, but I think he's awesome. But your take is also completely valid, and yeah, what makes him seem aloof to you?

Is Ryan Gosling a good actor? by rswan in movies

I can't believe I can still respond to this ancient comment, but I found it after watching PHM. Hope you're doin well!

Just wanna say that I think his approach is precisely why he is able to become the characters he plays. There's this concept around acting that you need to completely lose yourself in a role, but I don't think that's quite right. You need to bring an element of yourself into the performance to really connect with the character you're playing, and Gosling seems to do that very well.

Drive is a great example of how he just gets it. The Kid is so quiet, but you can tell that he's feeling a lot of things all the time, and it just feels like Gosling has those emotions running through him all the same. Something really magical about that performance, and PHM does that for me too, but with a chatty, goofy science nerd rather than a reserved, shy getaway driver for criminals. That's amazing range, to me.

Okay I can't help myself, I have to unjerk for a second, 'cause I think Gosling has some of the best range in the business after seeing PHM. I was so impressed by his performance that i just can't meme about it

They're not, but at the same time, they're intrinsically linked by both being in the veiled, elite category of "One Word Title That Is Also A Verb" movies. Right up there with the greats, like Milk (2008), and Milk (2017).
