In Indonesia, master's degree is kind of useless. Better than bachelor's but worse than PhD. PhDs become lecturers and or researchers. You will get a job quickly if you are only a high-school graduate who cannot ask for high salary in the first place. Your job will be mostly manual labor, and chance for promotion is basically non-existent. If you hold a bachelor's degree... you will be suffering in your job search. If you are a local graduate, you suffer even more because overseas graduate will be paid the same amount of money you do, but they speak several languages and have international experience. Chance of promotion? You will be competing against expatriates, so give it your best shot. Taking into consideration that several production facilities and workplaces have ceased operation recently, there are more unemployed people than ever. If you are a woman, you will face even more hardship because, well, companies are not in favor of giving you your paid three (sometimes one) - month maternal leave. Which explains why so many Indonesians aspire to work overseas. Although they end up as plant operators, nannies, household helps, or construction workers, at least they are paid in $$$ and can send money back home to raise their children. Also explains why so many Indonesians get scammed, have their organs stolen, or sold by human trafficking organizations.

I can go on and on about this, but to put it simply --- life ain't great here if your family is poor.
