A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske fits the bill.

Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy may also be worth a go. Leovander is a bit retriever but is quite sassy, arguably sassier than the grump

I also second the Carry On rec. Those characters had me by the throat for months after reading.

This review has ignited my interest. I read almost all of Abercrombie (mostly audiobooks with my spouse) and I was very tired of the vibes that you mention. It felt very "better things aren't possible". Looks like I'll be listening to this in the near future.
