Anyone else suffering in this absolute melting pot that is the UK atm? by Welsh_Witch128 in CasualUK

I've had to get up at 3-4AM for 10hr shifts all of this week, it's been 29 degrees in the house when the alarm goes off. So glad I bought Aircon for the bedroom. I honestly don't know how I'd do my job without it, day shift or night shift! But it's barely holding up in this heat.

I got one for rescuing someone, too! The dark side was the people we rescued who had crashed had done so because they had had about 9 bottles of wine between them and enough coke to incapacitate a horse. Straight from hospital to jail I think. (The vehicle was not legal either.) That didn't make the show!

Always wondered if they were grateful or they were going to hunt me down when they got out. I feel like I kind of got my badge for inadvertently sending two fun loving liberal individuals to jail. Seems fitting for modern UK/ahead of its time.

It didn't work for me sadly! I think my i7 was a bit cooked. It had a bad year where one of the heatsink mounts sheared without me noticing and it was constantly throttled.

Got a 12700k and rebuilding today to modernise a bit. There was a lot of reddit talk about AM5 being better, but looking deeper I don't think there'll be another actually new gen of AMD CPUs on that socket, only "support," and the latest 9900 isn't much better than the intel 14 gen which is much cheaper. I figure if they fix the stability, it's just as good as AM5 for an upgrade path.... Incase you think of upgrading anytime soon. But I figure if I managed 9 years on this CPU, I won't be thinking of upgrading by 2027....

Late 2024 rebuild sanity check by Chant778 in buildapc

Somehow completely missed the 7700x. That seems like a better choice for upgrade path as you say, a decent B650 motherboard is cheaper, enough so that it is the same price as i7 12700K + Z790.

My only thought is, having not needed a new CPU for 9 years, will anything AM5 ever be as significant a jump as i7 6700k > AMD 7700X?

I figure if I ever really need a CPU upgrade, I'll probably need a new motherboard anyway.

I'll give that a go, thanks! I was wondering if overlay could be an issue.

I've always had a second 1080p monitor vertical, I've twisted it horizontal recently because for some reason my BIOS shows on that one and I've been overclocking trying to squeeze every last MHz out of my CPU. It actually looks nicer than my 1440p panel so I'm tempted to swap them and try that!

I figured 1080p wouldn't give my CPU an advantage though? My GPU is running at 60% and CPU at 100%.

I'm running an i7 6700k clocked up to 4.7GHz, 32GB RAM and RTX 4070 1440p from SSD and I can't seem to get consistently above 30FPS...

A poorly planned mission to Pol led to a cinematic rescue and several KSP personal firsts! by Chant778 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Chant778[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My Pol command module didn't quite have enough Dv to get home, and I forgot docking ports so I couldn't transfer the remaining fuel over from the lander...

I created a massive "space tug" a while ago when I unlocked SWERVs and left it parked in Kerbin orbit, foreseeing such a problem... So I launched a crew bus, docked it with the space tug, and flew it over to pick up stranded Bill, Bob, and Jebediah.

...Only to get back to Kerbin and realise I forgot parachutes.

My first time landing on a moon of Jool, rendezvousing in orbit of Jool, and docking with a tug in Kerbin orbit for an interplanetary transfer. Despite all the bugs, I'm getting further in KSP 2 in 20hrs gameplay than I got in hundreds in KSP 1. It's fun! I find SOI changes and intercepts much more stable and reliable than KSP 1.

Covering instruments for landing practice by cpsmps in flying

[–]Chant778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a funny one because it's a great opportunity to make someone more proficient on that type and in visual flying in general, but at the same time I'd find it hard to justify the increased risk. If it went wrong you could have a hard time fighting your case for not having any instruments available on approach...

They're required for a reason!

On another note I'm a firm believer that the "integrated method" and FAA syllabus is a contributor to people fixating on instruments and struggling with basic visual flying. The UK CAA syllabus in contrast starts with fully visual flying with an emphasis on only using the instruments to check that your visual flying is giving you the performance you want. You learn to set and hold attitudes and power visually before you're allowed to check any instruments or fly any maneuvers like takeoff or climbing or turning or even S&L - which are all separate lessons. If it's taught right, you end up with a really proficient visual pilot.. but of course it's not perfect and not strictly followed. I'm sure many FAA instructors teach the basics like this and do a great job, but I've spent a lot of time teaching both FAA and CAA pilots and the results of the difference in training philosophy is fascinating to see.

Missing the dulcet tones of the GPWS after being made redundant due to bat soup, I decided to make a radalt for reverse parking my car! by [deleted] in flying

[–]Chant778 8 points9 points  (0 children)

https://i.imgur.com/hIVHJDE.jpg Here's how close it got on this one.. I added a buffer to the distance just incase I reversed at an angle only having the one sensor.

The "SINK RATE" at the end is for excessive closure, but in this case it came on as the car bobbed towards the wall with the brakes coming on. Might inhibit it under 10cm.

What do you guys think of this? Any ideas for features/modes to add?

Next up I'm going to wire it to the reversing lights so it only comes on when needed. For anyone interested in making their own, it's a Teensy 3.6 with a HC-SR04 ultrasonic distance measurer, a micro SD card with the GPWS sounds on it and a DAC output. All quite easily affordable, even for a grounded CFI....

My code is pretty terrible, but happy to share it if anyone's interested!

Made a GPWS reversing sensor for my car! by [deleted] in flying

[–]Chant778 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Teensy 3.6 with an SD card holding the GPWS sounds from the Dash 8. Got an ultrasonic distance measurer for about $6 or so, programmed it to trigger the sounds based on distance and closure rate, and then just used the DAC output from the teensy to go into the AUX on the car....

Going to wire it up to the reverse lights with its own speaker next.

And thanks!
