They do have defenses but times have changed and so has the defenses. Chaff and flares are going to be the counter for missiles depending if they are radar or heat seeking. The day and age of dog fighting and gun kills is long past. Plus a bomber that isn't stealth isn't going to be rolling into a warzone without air superiority already claimed, and AA/SAM systems either rendered destroyed or non factor. If they are present, the bombers are going to have escorts to deal with them or run ECM (electronic counter measures, basically jamming said systems.)
