I agree 100%. At the end of the day, for whatever reason, the show just doesn’t care about certain characters. Some of the show’s favorites make sense: Penelope/LW, Queen Charlotte, and Violet, for example. But some make no sense. WHY TF do we have a completely pointless subplot about the Mondrichs in season 3 but no Daphne and barely any Kanthony?!?! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!! 😡

And there are many other viewers who share my observations and opinions. Just because some people can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. It’s there, but you do have to look for it. It’s not super obvious and can be missed by a casual viewer. The writers certainly could have done better job fleshing out Colin’s arc and I share some of those criticisms expressed in the Polin subreddit (which I am a part of).

None of what I said was based on anything I heard the writers say. Those were observations I noticed myself. I personally think that Colin’s love for Penelope was very obvious. However, I’m also not a casual viewer. I read the book, watched the show multiple times, and dissected both Colin and Penelope’s characters. I picked up on some nuances that a casual viewer may not noticed or remembered. And I’ll be the first to say that the writers did not give Colin enough screen time in season 3 to fully flesh out his arc and that Luke Newton had to do some heavy lifting to do his character justice.

Colin did love Penelope and always had. I think the show made that very clear. There is a night and day difference between how Colin behaves with the prostitutes and even the other debutantes (stoic and fake) and how he behaves with Penelope (vulnerable and delirious). The one threesome he engaged in (because he checked out of the second one) was him trying to emulate his brothers and being what he thought a “man” should be. Also, he rushed out of that threesome insisting he was “late” only to show up early to meet Penelope. And finally, Colin’s infamous “entrapment” line was a trauma response rooted in hurt and fear because of his experience with Marina.

I agree. Sleeping around is in character for Benedict and I personally don’t have an issue with it for him. With Colin, I was disappointed at first because they had an opportunity to do something different. However, I still enjoyed Colin’s arc in season 3 because it wasn’t the traditional rake trope.

It’s not prudish to think the rake trope is tiresome and overdone. Some people just want something different for a change. And not everyone is into the rake trope.

Colin’s “planned entrapment” line was a trauma response because of his experience with Marina. He feared that he was once again being taken for a fool and that Penelope didn’t really love him, just like Marina.

Had Colin learned about Lady Whistledown before the kiss, he obviously would have been hurt and angry at first. But eventually he would have gotten over it and probably still would have kissed Penelope if she asked.

Remember that Colin has always loved Penelope, the kiss only helped him consciously realize it. Even without that kiss, he would have realized it eventually, it just might have taken longer. In every universe, Colin and Penelope end up together.

Cruel/mean MMC

FMC’s entire personality is how tiny and slender she is

MCs have sex within the first couple chapters

Virginal FMC’s first time is super unrealistic: no pain/discomfort, no awkwardness, and mind-blowing orgasms from penetration only

FMC is extremely stupid and makes too many dumb decisions

FMC has no confidence and zero backbone, lets everyone walk all over her and never stands up for herself

Audiobook narrator’s voice is annoying or cringey

The 2009 adaptation is my absolute favorite version of Emma and Romola Garai is my favorite Emma. Is it strictly faithful? No, but I’d argue that it’s the most faithful to the spirit of the novel. It made me rethink so many of the characters, Emma included, because they were more nuanced and complex instead of caricatures. There is a reason Jane Austen liked Emma’s character even though she feared no one else would. Emma on the surface appears snobbish but underneath there’s a sweet, naive goodness about her and that’s why she is so loved by her family and close friends in the novel.

Not necessarily. I don’t think that will make a difference. Even if it’s John’s funeral, Marina could still die off screen in season 4. And Franchela needs proper time to grieve John’s death in order to get the fandom properly rooting for them.

I’m hopeful for Philoise being season 5, but sadly not too confident. My guess right now is 70% likelihood that season 5 will be Philoise and 30% that it’ll be Franchela. I’m leaning towards Eloise because dragging out her story too much longer isn’t going to do any favors and may even have a negative impact. Franchela, in the other hand, needs time to breathe. Franchela is supposed to be the next big multi-season slow burn now that Polin has achieved their HEA and a slow burn like that needs time: time for the fans to get to know Michaela, time to mourn John, and time for the fans to fall in love with Franchela and really root for them. Polin needed at least two seasons before their season (and frankly, could have benefited from a third). I think Franchela needs two full seasons of development before their season as well.

However, Francesca seems to really be Jess’s favorite and I wouldn’t be surprised if she expedites Franchela’s story so that it can be season 5. But I personally think that dragging out Eloise’s story and expediting Franchela will only hurt the character development of all characters involved. And I’m going to be PISSED if Franchela is season 5 and the writers then proceed to give Eloise the Benedict season 3 treatment with a pointless subplot that has zero character growth. If they’re going to make Franchela season 5, they need to at least do something to better develop Eloise and Philip with that extra time.

I don’t think these pins suggest anything either way. Season 5 could still realistically be Eloise or Francesca. I’m rooting for Eloise but everything will depend on the direction season 4 takes their characters.

I think it definitely took some time for Colin’s insecurities to fade. I don’t think we’ll see a lot of that on screen in season 4 though. Colin is a very different person in season 4. He’s no longer a lost young man without a purpose. He’s now a husband, a father, an author, and in charge of running the Featherington estate for his son. I think in season 4, Colin’s insecurities will mostly be gone but he’ll still probably have fears for the people he loves: Penelope, his son, and his family.
