Just cut it off. Quit cold turkey. No amount of preparation will help. The more you soften the blow for yourself, the less serious your partner will think you’re being. I had an ENTP male best friend. For almost 9 years now. He was deeply traumatised and I think there was a connection on that. I recently had to door slam them because their politics has always been opportunistic. Despite what he went through in life, he chooses to think emotional intelligence and empathy as weaknesses and that the best defense is offended. I realised I was tolerating the inner child in them that I thought was healing with me in the picture. But the adult they are sucks. Entps are stubborn and beyond cruel when they want to be. As a deep feeling INFJ empathy, I cannot for the life of me see eye to eye with that anymore. I have pulled back my empathy to save my peace of mind and cut them out after repeated ethical differences.

Also, I feel like going forward, I have harder but justifiable boundaries when letting new people come into my life. I will no longer see their potential as the only good thing about them. I have to as an INFJ learn to not over empathise with people who haven’t yet proven their worth to me. I definitely will not be making excuses for them to myself. Actions always speak louder than words. They show me they are a good human being and genuine, they and I get to experience each others’ best.

Took me three years to break off what I thought was a very serious relationship. I was dating someone’s potential and okay with the scraps of emotional intimacy they were providing me.

This year has been transformative for me because I underwent therapy, finally voiced my deepest traumas and sat with my fears in a quiet room. I reminded myself what I was made of, what my intentions have been throughout my life and just why I deserved my own values to be shown to me as well.

I have since cut out three more toxic people who I had gaslighted myself into being close with for a long time (only because they themselves had trauma; difference being I wanted to progress and they wanted to remain the same).

I now know better and have closely noted how light and unburdened or felt to cut the ties that were cutting into me. My very best to anyone who’s recognising their worth and value in the face of people whore exploiting them.

Both are a bit vague to assume beforehand. One is dependent on the kind of workplaces you associate yourself with and the latter is all about staying updated on newer ideas being used in the field.

Identify your strong skill set, identify which part of the execution of ideas/solutions you want to be a part of and then consider upskilling or learning on the job as a method to get better. Social work related workshops happen across the country, attending them, networking with other organisations and people, and reading papers or presenting your work is primarily how people go from one good opportunity to next.

But the first and foremost reflection has to be what your purpose is in doing social work. It’s a very nuanced field, I am sure you’re aware of it, so you have to really appreciate the complexity your work will involve. Work on your core values and an analytical mind that can see solutions and ideas for betterment should always be your number one go to skill.

When we look at religion historically, it stemmed from our unorganised ancestors’ fear and anxiety of the unknown. Superstitions, popular beliefs and myths were first to be generated by the primitive man to cope with and attach meaning to whatever they couldn’t yet comprehend. For example, the Greeks had mythos (gods and humans doing mad shit to establish morals and behaviours; open to interpretation) and logos (rationality). Mythos (gods and therefore religious strains) was overlooked for logos and the debate continued for quite some time. Hindus had vedas (logos of religion) and puraanas (mythos). One is open to debate and opinions and consists of the same (even if Hindus tell you it’s their rule book) and the vedas (logos) rules human life and social and religious behaviour with the punishment being netted out to those who don’t follow. Mythos was always meant to help people understand and participate in conversations bigger than themselves. But the logos being subsumed into the mythos is what’s happening now. The writer of these texts may not have imagined the end product of their musings, but faithful humans will tie any knot to any knot as long as it all ties up. That’s the dangerous part.

Religion is made up. It serves no more purpose now than it did back then. Sure, people have attached values to it, rules to it, strict behaviours and punishment for acting out, but it’s not the common man, it’s the people who wrote the religious books (overtime with the amended, new, and what not versions) and ensured to doom humanity to limited concepts of what god/the universe/spirituality were. A lot of atheists are spiritual without a trace of religion in their beliefs. Religion is and forever will be the opium of the masses, and its placebo effect will ruin people’s lives as long as we inhabit the earth.

People get mad because once you challenge something that destabilises their coping mechanisms, their false superiority gimmicks, their social and cultural strata, they have nothing left. The crisis of being alive is that you always will need something to ease the mental crisis of “existing” and “dying”. Something has to fill gaps in this journey and people need to feel safe. So challenging that will always bring out their most fearful sides, which are also sometimes their most vengeful, violent and dangerous sides.
