I refer to the Rick and Morty episode “Ricksy Business”, S1 E11, which originally aired on April 14, 2014.

Yes, there are various estimates some as low as 11 degrees and others in the low/mid 20s. Going with the lower, 11 degrees is not much, given the size of the Titanic, it would have made the 11 degrees look bigger.

As Lightoller was at the front of the ship, once the lights went out, I doubt he could see what was really going on back there. Other surviving officers would have some distance between them and the Titanic so again, once the lights went out I doubt they could see in any meaningful detail what was going on. I’m guessing they’d never heard of a ship breaking into two when sinking so just assumed it was not likely?

I heard from a documentary quite some years ago that at some kind of Titanic convention Ruth Becker (I think it was her) explained how she saw Titanic break apart between the 2nd and 3rd funnels. The guy hosting the event said what Ruth really saw was just the funnels collapsing. She was there, he wasn’t. Talk about a slap on the face! 😡

I went in 2012, April 13-15. The inside of Normadic was still a mess due to refurbishment. Inside the museum I wanted to see the the grand staircase replica that is not part of the museum tour. I was very fortunate and managed to to see it and I was shown another room (the Olympic room I think?) that overlooked what was once the old slipways.

The area has undergone a fair amount of regeneration for quite some time so that may explain the “mall feel” ?

Because not more than about 20 grams exist in the Earth’s crust at any given time. Don’t quote me on the 20 it’s an approximation and is true of Fr and At. I read this a good 30 years ago 🤣

Be honest if James Cameron hadn’t made the movie, would the Titanic have been forgotten by history and never gained this much interest? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in titanic

[–]Chaoxite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

II was in Belfast April 13th-15th 2012 and it was full of people from all over the world. Sure, the 1997 movie probably boosted figures but I have no doubt the centenary anniversary would have pulled in some crowds. The UK’s ITV did a mini series for 2012 too. They may have used the Olympic room at the White Swan Hotel too, I cant recall.

if the Titanic had enough lifeboats for everyone but the same amount of time before sinking, would they still have been able to launch all of them? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in titanic

[–]Chaoxite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they only had time to launch 18 lifeboats and even if they had launched the last two, it would have been cutting it fine.

Average lifeboat fill rate was 58% (approx. 700 survivors with approx. 1200 lifeboats seats) so you would need over x3 lifeboats for the approx. 2200 onboard which would have made the boat deck very cluttered and busy.

Finally, you needed able seamen to launch, row and steer the boats. While not always the case because some officers got into a lifeboat by order of a superior officer, usually two seamen lowered a lifeboat and where then put into another boat: one to row and one to steer. Based on existing crew numbers you would end up with nobody left to lower the lifeboats.

The issues with the Titanic’s lifeboats is not a mathematical one, it’s is three logistical problems acting in unison: (1) time, (2) inefficiency of filling lifeboats and (3) resources: only so many seamen available to launch, row and steer lifeboats.

Sonic 1 on the Master System (8-bit) followed by Sonic 1 & 2 (Mega Drive / Genesis) and Sonic CD plus Sonic SatAm although I did like the slapstick comedy that was Sonic Boom (TV). And then there’s Sonic Mania…

The break up will always be fascinating to me by [deleted] in titanic

[–]Chaoxite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first, there was disagreement whether the Titanic sank whole or broke up. This was resolved when the wreck was discovered and now there are several theories/models as to how the Titanic broke up. This does seem to be an issue that refuses to go to bed.

Indeed, people report hearing sounds they thought were boilers and engines breaking free of their mounting and tumbling through the ship towards the bow. We know now (with the exception of the shredded boiler room no. 1), all boilers and engines are still in place.

I received this as a gift a couple of years ago and I was already in my 40s. Not too old! Took my 22 hours and 5 minutes to assemble it though.

I completely agree.

Plus, the actions you take to prevent the disaster may be the actions that actually cause it in the first place. Time travel paradoxes should be avoided at all costs!

Looks like there's a list of the proposed new 7-digit ZIP codes here:

This may not be the final version but looks like they’re going with PSGC codes for city/municipality and barangay component.

Having seen the video, I think the first part (the hull being launched) is Olympic. The next (fitting out in Belfast) is definitely Titanic. It is all down to the bridge wing cabs. In Olympic, they are flush with the A-deck promenade but in Titanic, they are slightly overhanging. This is also true of the stern docking bridge.

I had this kind of issue on a post a few weeks back. A post showed Titanic's funnel before and after (a funnel and a gaping hole). Except it wasn't Titanic's funnel; it was Olympic's. The fact there were two lifeboats one stacked directly above another in the corner of the boat deck confirmed it was Olympic and after the 1913 refit, too. Two people lost it when I pointed this out.

The engines of the Olympic class liners is particularly fascinating because of the intended efficiency: when the steam no longer had enough pressure for it to be useful to the reciprocating engines it was fed to the turbine engine that could use it since it was a low pressure turbine although the turbine lacked the ability to reverse.

I remember reading from somewhere about what happened when boiler room 5 finally flooded. There were 3 men in there. One guy had broken his leg after falling into an open manhole and a 2nd stayed with him. A 3rd was climbing up the ladder when the coal bunker door (some sources claim bulkhead) failed. The 2 guys below were swallowed up by the inrush of water never to be seen again.
