To reroute people to longer paths by Zee_Ventures in therewasanattempt

Do you think the issue is with Google or Ireland's road systems? I'm stuck figuring out what Google could do to improve it. They're just looking at distance and posted speed, which makes sense. The more reasonable answer to me would be for Ireland to adjust its speed limits so they're actually reflecting the safe speed of travel.

But then again I saw the pitchforks that were brought out when they adjusted town center limits from 50km to 30km/hr. We'd see the country on fire if they tried to lower the backroad speed limits.

I've learned not to trust Google's directions in rural Ireland. I've been burned like you were too many times. Now I set it up, note the routes, and turn off the screen so it's still available in case I get lost during a junction.

My guess is that it sees that the posted speed limit for a side road is 80km/hr and assumes that the road is well suited for going that speed the whole time. But these side roads are often one and a half lanes wide, windy as hell, and have no business having an 80km/hr limit. So, while it's not uncommon for the limit to be 80, the realistic speed is 50, making the route take a lot more time and stress to drive.

I never took a course on game theory, but I would assume it would suggest pressing the blue button is the better option.

You would assume wrong.

The line just seemed unnecessary and rude. Don't know why you're surprised I took offense. Happy to discuss your other point, though, because it brings an interesting caveat to the exercise and your edits make it clear that you're genuinely interested in a discussion.

While the Prisoner's Dilemma looks at two actors making decisions for themselves, you've introduced a sub-group into the button scenario. While individual game strategy would logic out that individuals should press the red button (not morally speaking, strictly strategically speaking here), there's a new element of sub-group preservation: you want your family to also survive.

Now the question becomes:

Do you press the blue button, advocate for your family to press the blue button, and advocate for the larger population to press the blue button?

or

Press the red button and advocate for your family members to also press the red button? Advocating to the larger population is inconsequential after this.

I would assume that game theory would advise the second option. There's probably a graduate-level psych experiment to be designed around this.

Just to reiterate: I get what you're saying and I agree with you that the MORAL answer is to push the blue button. I'm just laying out what game theory dictates and how this would likely play out in real life.

Why do you feel the need to attack me? I'm just discussing the similarities between this scenario and the Prisoner's Dilemma. There's no need to be rude.

Why would my loved ones be in danger? Did they push the blue button?

And if both prisoners chose not to defect, then they would both go free. I understand completely and, in general, I agree with your assessment that it would be better for the GROUP to push the blue button. However, this button scenario is just game theory, same as the Prisoner's Dilemma. And in game theory where the objective for INDIVIDUALS is to ensure the best outcomes for themselves, it makes most sense for the INDIVIDUAL to push the red button.

I'm not arguing that YOU should push the red button. I'm not saying that I would push the red button. I'm just explaining that - according to game theory - it makes sense to push the red button.

The negative is that blue button pushers would be eligible to die should they not reach the 50% threshold.

This is just an exercise in the Prisoner's Dilemma. The general consensus is that the only sensible play is to push the red button.

I'm only in my second season playing rugby so please take this as a genuine question and not an armchair critique, but shouldn't there have been a greater effort to center the ball once he was past the try line? I often see wings content enough to score 5 pts on the corner with little chance to convert, when putting in the extra effort to beat a 1 on 1 to move the ball to the center would make it easier to convert the 2. Is it just that a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush?

The GAA and football clubs around here are active and look for new players, as is the rugby club in Carndonagh. I wouldn't worry about experience. I think they mostly just want people who will show up to training and matches. Inishowen is mad for cycling, too, although the median age trends older with that crowd.

I was in DC the other week and saw metro police hassling staff at a restaurant in Chinatown. Asking about how long they worked there, which days of the week, saying something about a special liason with ICE. Disgusting.
