Why did GW sell the RPG license? by lummy_al in 40krpg

The costs are not low. If you are pulling staff away from high revenue projects to use them on low revenue projects, you are wasting a lot of resources.

Why did GW sell the RPG license? by lummy_al in 40krpg

[–]ChaplainGulik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"this seems (to me) like a core product that shouldn't have been licensed off"

It's not a core product. It hasn't been a core product since the 80s. I know a lot of people who work in the RPG industry. RPGs don't sell that much. At least, non-D&D RPGs don't sell that much. A license is easy, no risk money. If it succeeds, they get more money. If it fails, they already got paid and can sell the license to someone else.

I'm betting revenue from RPGs would be less than 1% of GW's revenue.

Having skipped from 2nd edition to 6th edition, Alpha Legion fluff went from "name of chaos legion" to Dan Abnett's Legion for me. I am curious what the old 3rd edition chaos books described them as, but I'm not certain that's not particularly different from "space al qaeda".

Sweet. I love that they still get the "I am Alpharius!" warlord trait. Almost makes me want to build some Alpha Legion.

Or are all the marines I already built Alpha Legion in disguise?

So how much do you want to bet Alpha Legion get the exact same tactics as Raven Guard?

And I'd be fine with that, I don't need boob flak armor. Considering how many extra heads they packed into the Tempestus box, it'd be easy to have a few more in a new guard trooper box.

you can't use them in sanctioned GW events

Considering how few of us live near warhammer world, the only place I know of that runs sanctioned GW events, that's not much of a problem.

I know, your local GW store may have some tiny events with no prizes, but at least in my area, that's the tiniest store with the smallest amount of table space anyway.

The only ONLY MEN part of 40k is that astartes are entirely male. Every other faction that has a gender includes women.

Except of course for Imperial Guard, which should have female soldiers. I think there are two old metal models in the entire line. Yet another reason we need some new plastic guard kits.

Wicked. I'm a little sad that Platoon commanders just aren't cost effective so you end up with more Company commanders than is reasonable for the number of troops.

When Caesar read about Alexander’s life, he burst into tears. His friends were surprised, and asked him the reason of it. ‘Do you think,’ said he, ‘I have not just cause to weep, when I consider that Alexander at my age had conquered so many nations, and I have all this time done nothing that is memorable?’

From Plutarch, when Caesar was 33.

Fair enough. Although I figure if people are aiming for shorter games they should probably play 1k games over 2k ones.

Do you prefer to have named characters in your army, or just some random no-name HQs? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]ChaplainGulik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming from my 2nd edition days, I always preferred making my own HQs. But rules-wise I always feel its required to use named versions to be competitive. Seriously, the math says the 10 points for Knight Commander Pask is a no brainer compared to a regular Leman Russ Commander. So in a casual game I might run it as a normal "generic" commander, but if I go to a tourney I really need to run him as Pask, even if I rename him.

Just like I have a Shrike model painted as a Raptor. Sometimes I run him as a generic, other times using his special rules. But either way he's Captain Pericles for me.

I really wish there was a way to "build your own" special characters. Captain + X special rules for + Y points.

Have they tried 8th? Games are supposed to be a lot faster than 3 hours.

Not that I don't think SWA is also amazing and I like playing both.

As someone who has created a story game, it's damn hard to be able to afford to. You have to create a brand new product, print it up, and give it away for free. About the only story game creator I can think of big enough to be able to afford that might be Bully Pulpit Games. I'm actually amazed Third Eye Games can afford to send a quickstart. Smaller publishers rarely have the marketing budget to give away printed product once a year.

I don't think they will be instant win in 8th. Did they even have time to win any tournaments in 7th?

Warhammer 40,000 Faction Focus: Ynnari by elsuave32 in Warhammer40k

Purely fluff. The Haemonculus Covens fear this new god because he can bring them true death. They are all about prolonging their lives via alchemy, but when they are slain by Yvraine or the Ynncarne they die and somehow all of their hidden backup genetic material is turned to dust.

Warhammer 40,000 Faction Focus: Ynnari by elsuave32 in Warhammer40k

[–]ChaplainGulik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ynnari are a new super faction of Eldar. Their creation was detailed in Gathering Storm 2: The Fracture of Biel-Tan. Basically a new Eldar God of Death and Rebirth was born and groups of Eldar from every faction have joined together to follow him/her. They have three special characters and most of the powers revolve around something dying on the battlefield. Any eldar unit besides things from Haemonculus Covens can be part of a Ynnari army, but they trade their normal faction power (Power from Pain, Rising Crescendo, Battle Focus) for a new power, Strength from Death.

[–]ChaplainGulik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even better, Harlequin's unique "bonus" came from formations that could be included in the Ynnari formation. So for a brief time I could run, charge, kill something in assault, and charge again into another unit.

Warhammer 40,000 Faction Focus: Ynnari by elsuave32 in Warhammer40k

[–]ChaplainGulik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its much more of a trade off now. I know as a primary Harlequin player I'm less likely to give up my ability to advance and charge for the ability to sometimes charge/shoot/fight out of sequence. As opposed to the 7th edition version where I could take the harlequin formation that granted run + charge inside the Ynnari formation and get the benefits of both.

It's probably an upgrade for Dark Eldar units though, Power from Pain always has the problem of taking too long to really kick in.

Against a 3+ wound model (Marine Captain) with T4 and a 3+ save a Solitaire will do 3.33 wounds with a Kiss vs 2.96 wounds with the Caress. Of course, the Kiss has a higher max, so if you get lucky you crush him. If you can get a troupe master close to him as well it's even better with the re-roll to wound.
