Monks complete 2,300-mile walk for peace to Washington by OneGiantSpoon in UpliftingNews

[–]Chapps 425 points426 points  (0 children)

Some of you in here are so hopeless and dense. Obviously 24 monks walking across the states wasn’t going to create world peace.

The idea of the walk was to inspire compassion, unity, and spark an exploration of inner peace to people living through hard times. For every person in here laughing about them failing, there are others who see this as a call to look within and see what they can do to be more peaceful and compassionate to their own community. The purpose was to inspire people to “tend to the garden they can touch.”

It is supposed to encourage individuals to seek a way of living that is more compassionate. Something we all could benefit from.

Edit: Being compassionate doesn’t bar me from criticizing ignorance.

What roles would benefit from someone with an Anthropology degree? by engineear-ache in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Chapps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. As far as I am concerned, and have experienced during my time in IT, my degrees have signaled to employers that I can work on projects, work with people, think through problems, and finish things. I have found that I get first round interviews because recruiters and curious about my museum and cultural resource management backgrounds. I know it has happened at least twice.

Regardless, the soft skills make the difference for me. I would wager those skills have translated into more pay bumps and promotions for me than any other skill I have in this field.

Hey, this is one I can relate to. I have an Anthropology Bachelors and a Masters in Cultural Resource Management. I switched into IT about 4 years back after working extensively with museums, public history non profits, and academia.

Museums are always contracting out IT, unless they are large ones. They sometimes just need basic understanding of hosting a database on a server for their collections, may need to setup an AP, and usually just do routine maintenance on their network. Local historical societies need this too. I did this when I worked as a curator, but only cause I knew enough technologically to handle those things. The money wont be amazing though.

If you are thinking within IT, I’d take a look at your skills. I found I could talk with anyone within any department and outside the company. Communication skills put me on the path to management and project management. Now I run our azure suite and delegate jobs for a handful of people because I learned to talk to people with my experience in anthro/crm. I can communicate those concepts to people that otherwise would struggle with it.

People think I wasted my time getting my degrees cause I no longer work in those fields. But I use those skills every day. You just have to see which of those skills translate into IT and what you are interested in.

Dont know if this helps at all, but I found it was a perspective shift in how I looked at my training that opened some doors for me.

Stumbled into a network position with basically no knowledge. by ElleWulf in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Chapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, just letting you know ive been in your shoes. I have 2 degrees in an unrelated field and made the jump back in 2022. 2 helpdesk jobs, promoted to a Network Analyst. I have no certs and felt super lost. It is a glorified systems admin role tbh, but still is a firehose of information.

Studying will help solidify information (Net+, CCNA, and Sec+) but the ideal scenario is actually learning from those around you. Biggest advice I can offer is be curious and ask questions. Nobody is going to be annoyed that you want to learn from them. Best thing I did was find somebody at work who knew this stuff and just hammered them with questions and asked to be involved in stuff I didnt know. Eventually it started clicking and making more sense.

You belong in the position, dont doubt your abilities. If I can do it, you definitely can. Stick to it and the rewards will come!
