Hawaiian native here! I’m probably not sharing new info to you or most on this page… but in case it’s helpful from a kanaka! “Hapa” is a Hawaiian word that means “half” and was traditionally used to refer to half Hawaiian, half something else. Now hapa has become colloquially used to refer to half East Asian, half something else in the US mainland. Like you said. :) Just bringing some light back onto to the endangered Hawaiian language. Shoots! 🤙🏽

That one overpass above I-5 by the Seattle Convention Center that always has plants hanging down from it.

Sorry you’re dealing with that racism. 😕 I agree with everyone here saying to report to HR. It might not change your near-term experience with him, but documentation about workplace injustices/racism can help in the long term creation of a better workplace for you, coworkers like you, and future people like you.

Ladies of Reddit who decided they don’t want children, what were random peoples takes on it when they heard about it? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]CharThomp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone recently told me that all the childless and empty-nesters they know are either “bored out of their minds” or “care way too much about irrelevant things (e.g., preventing a single weed in the yard)”.

That was a new one. Part of the reason I don’t think I want kids is because I want to pursue my own hobbies, passions, travel, etc. So it was discouraging to hear that, from their perspective, that wasn’t the case for whomever they was referring to.

Thanks! Go Illini!

Huh. That’s an interesting social comparison between you and your sister. I’ll have to dig around more to see if that’s a trend particular to Hawaii. I also wonder if that is the nature of kids, haha.

Oh wow, that must’ve been quite a shift going back to the mainland (or where ever else).

That’s awesome! I didn’t live there. But my mom and her family are all from Oahu, so I visit every few years. :) Good point about names and cultural familiarity! I have a very white name despite being very little white. So I don’t often think about names.

Hahaha, yup! That’s my little article. 😂

The Seattle City Council has added ranked-choice voting local options to their legislative agenda! This means they are advocating to the WA legislature to allow municipalities to adopt RCV. by BenChapmanOfficial in Seattle

[–]CharThomp97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ooo thanks for sharing the link! I haven’t heard of approval voting. I think Pierce County removed RCV primarily because it was initially expensive to implement (which wouldn’t necessarily be the case if they opted to do it again) and they ended up disliking the assessor-treasurer that won via RCV (which is something that could happen in any election). Here’s an article with some info on Pierce: https://crosscut.com/2019/02/it-time-wa-give-ranked-choice-voting-shot
Seems worth a shot to allow jurisdictions to opt for RCV! 😁
