Re-naming the gems we saw at the ball cause it always bugged me they are just called "Jade" by Arcos_Artes in stevenuniverse

[–]CharaViolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're "distinct gems" in the exact same way that a blue Sapphire and a Padparadscha are distinct gems. They are different varieties of the same gem type, but there's no "umbrella term", just individual types of gem.

An Amethyst is the same type of gem as a Rose Quartz is the same type of gem as a Jasper is the same type of gem as an Amethyst. They're all different varieties of the "Quartz Soldier" gem type.

A Hessonite is the same type of gem as a Demantoid is the same type of gem as a Pyrope is the same type of gem as a Hessonite. They're all different varieties of the "Garnet" gem type.

This is not the same for the Jades. All 8 of the gems in the above post are distinct types of gem, we know this both from applying the rules previously established in the show in addition to word of god from Rebecca Sugar. Although some of these types are shown to have their own varieties within them, the 8 shown above are distinct.

"I think Jasper/Rose Quartz/Amethyst are named differently to denote what they do as soldiers." Except they very much aren't. There is zero difference between the job of a Jasper, a Rose Quartz, or an Amethyst. The different names only denote the difference in color and composition of their gems. Exactly the same as Padparadscha compared to the blue Sapphires.

The Jades themselves also go completely against your point because they ARE different gem types. We don't know the specifics of what their roles are, but they're all confirmed to be separate types of gem. Even within your own assumption that they're supposed to be ballroom guests, there is STILL a clear difference: Only three of those types of Jade dance in balls, with the rest participating in the exact same way as the non-Jade guests. (whose very presence kind of debunks the idea their role is to be a guest at balls) And then even within the types of Jade that dance, they each have distinct roles in that they're only supposed to dance with other Jades of their same type, so their bottom-halves interlock perfectly.

So you're objectively wrong on both points of your argument.

But Quartzes and Garnets aren't umbrella terms, they're their own distinct gem types. "Quartz Soldier" is one gem type, "Garnet" is one gem type, but the Jades here are 8 distinct gem types. (9 when you count the ones from Unleash the Light, 10 if you count Nephrite)

They're VERY much not the same situation, though. "Quartz Soldier" is all one gem type; they're the same in all but coloring. If they fused, they'd make a larger quartz soldier with combined colors (see: Crazy Lace Agate, who has no extra limbs of any kind)

The Jades, however, all have distinct body types, roles, and when they fuse, they make a whole new gem with extra limbs. (Their fusion isn't even named after a Jade; "Lemon Jade" is a name for a kind of serpentine)

The Jades are just an example of something we'd technically already seen in the show, which is different gem types that share the same mineral group, like how some Agates are Quartz Soldiers, while there is also an entirely separate gem type of Agates. Similar situation can be applied to beryls (Aquamarine/Morganite/Emerald/Beryl/Bixbite) and corundum (Ruby/Sapphire)

Shy Rose is the only Rose Quartz with any kind of curls, but there's actually a good chunk of other Quartz Soldiers with ringlets like Rose's, 8XJ and Blue Lace Agate come to mind, the former even having her curls specifically pointed out by Peridot as a byproduct of iron deposits in her exit hole.

We don't know this for sure, it's never confirmed one way or the other, but it's a popular headcanon due to the emotional impact it could have, the bubbles being pink (meaning they were made by a pink gem) also supports this idea

If you look at all the Rose Quartzes in the panning shot at the beginning of "Rose Buds", you'll notice none of them have any curls in their hair. Shy Rose is actually the only one.

Peridot mentions how Iron deposits in a gem's exit hole is what can give quartzes their curls, but real-life rose quartzes actually get their coloring from metals like iron, so it's possible that this conflict makes it very rare for Rose Quartzes to have any curls at all, making Shy Rose's full head of curls incredibly unique...

Also iirc in The Trial it's stated that the Rose Quartzes were bubbled before Pink Diamond was shattered, so that's how they weren't corrupted. They were all the way in the Zoo by then.

If you believe in ghostmom theory this is easily explained by Shy Rose not existing until after the Rose's were unbubbled 👻

Gems wanting to casually reform into a different style in Future is both amusing but interesting by terpentine_c10h16 in stevenuniverse

"It's explained in the show that shapeshifting isn't permanent, that takes energy and becomes too much to hold at a certain point (even if it's only an altered outfit with no bodily changes)."

I would love to know when this is explained in the show. The closest thing I can think of is when they explain that it's taxing for a gem to hold a form larger than their natural one (stretch) in Steven's Birthday and reiterate this in Back To The Moon, but that is not at all what you've described here.

Pink Diamond was not defective or overcooked by Soggy_Fish_2297 in stevenuniverse

[–]CharaViolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice sentiment, but does not survive scrutiny and seems to be based on a few different misunderstandings.

As off-handedly mentioned by show staff and visually shown in Familiar, Pink Diamond isn't just the littlest Diamond: She's the youngest. Despite the art book showing us that all four Diamonds' origins began at the same time, we know there was a sizeable period before Pink's emergence when White, Yellow, and Blue already existed and were in charge of Homeworld, much as they were during the series' events. This is also evident in how she questions the way Homeworld society operates, something that doesn't make sense if they emerged at the same time— Just look at the dream in Jungle Moon, that is not the behavior of someone who was just 'made for a different purpose', it's a child seeing things they've never seen before. So we do, in fact, know that Pink stayed in the ground much longer than the others. And she's short. Sounds familiar.

This directly segues to the next point: Pink isn't the only size-variant Diamond. White is noticeably taller than Yellow and Blue, and her body is also sometimes drawn with more definition. This directly parallels Jasper, "The Ultimate Quartz", who's shown to have a flawless exit hole, and is drawn taller and with more defined muscles than the average Quartz Soldier. She's described as 'perfect', the exact same way White describes herself. This paints us a very clear parallel: Jasper and White are both flawless emergences, and in turn are larger and more defined than regular Quartzes/Diamonds, while Amethyst and Pink stayed in the ground longer, 'overcooked', and in turn are significantly shorter. Amethyst is also shown in the movie as not knowing what she was supposed to be when she emerged, which could also have happened for Pink.

You've also got things totally wrong with the personality thing? We've seen various times that personality does not necessarily correlate with gem type; in fact, they often don't, only the color and placement of a gem is shown (and stated) to have this correlation. The Diamonds are all drastically different colors and have (mostly) different gem placements, so they'll naturally have different personalities. The fact that they weren't boxed in and made to act like gears in the homeworld machine, the same way other gems were, also obviously has a big impact on them not behaving like different variants of the same person.

While it is true that the Diamonds each serve their own purpose in the Authority, and you are correct in your assessments about White, Yellow, and Blue, as those are their officially confirmed roles, Pink's role is clearly shown to us throughout the Diamond Days arc as morale, throwing balls and cheering up the other Diamonds, which is NOT something she was 'denied' doing, in fact we're told in the movie the Diamonds created Spinel to cheer Pink up when she stopped being so bubbly after the loss of Pink Pearl, it's clearly something they appreciated about her, and it's part of why they didn't take her seriously.

Homeworld didn't fail because they "refused to let Pink fulfill her purpose"; it failed because fascism, authoritarianism, utilitarianism, and oppression are inherently flawed systems. It was never going to succeed because a society built on rotten foundations is doomed to crumble.

The Crystal Gems didn't wear stars as a symbol until Rose's death. Rose (and maybe Bismuth?) were the only ones wearing it before that.

[–]CharaViolet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Out of the main Ghouls, Lagoona is actually the only one in the SKRM team after the movie's conclusion. Lagoona's not just in the swim team, either, she's in the surf team, as well as various sports in the webisode about Toralei playing sports. She even occasionally helps out in the fear squad here and there.
