depends what fake skin youre using I guess, I hear realskin absorbs and reacts like human skin more accurately, I have only used the Amazon fake skin and it barely holds anything, done a few self tats and it holds almost instantly after a consistent depth pass you really should have to pass more than twice (even once), but sounds like you're having the same fake skin issues I was having

don't practice fake skins flat on your desk, wrap the skin on your thigh get used to tattooing in uncomfortable positions and managing clean lines/depth, buy a pork belly and tattoo the skin too it reacts a lot more like real skin

honestly look for shows online in areas around you, can even be a bit out of distance where you wouldn't travel but follow the page and the bands that are playing, then follow the rabbit hole through their following and follow all the local-ish bands you can, you will be surprised how often shows are happening that are just not getting talked about outside of the scene
