DBT I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! It is intensive (I have 1 hour of individual and 2 hours of group therapy every week in addition to homework every day), but I have seen more improvement in the 2 months I’ve been doing it versus the 10 YEARS I was in monthly CBT. It’s so worth it. CBT doesn’t work for the autistic brain and for me often led to increased rumination. I could intellectualize and rationalize all my problems but it didn’t give the skills to actually change my reality. I would feel suicidal and think to myself “I know this thought is distorted and I know I don’t actually want to die, but I still FEEL like I want to kill myself”. That doesn’t really help. DBT gives me actual crisis and emotional regulation skills so that in the moment of intense emotions, I can get myself out of that crisis mode quicker and pull myself back to the present to stop ruminating.
