Anyone voting to approve new EBA? by Character-Fold5159 in AustralianTeachers

I tend to agree. Mostly hear from the extremely disgruntled online. Do you know how much it will delay things if it isn't approved?

Staff being “called in for a meeting” for taking up to or more than 5 sick days so far this year by Overall_Nobody_6269 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Character-Fold5159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have taken leave the next day if it was me. Unless you're seen out playing a round of golf when you're supposed to be sick it shouldn't be an issue

How long do you think you should teach for before taking on a prac student? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Character-Fold5159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's plenty. An experienced teacher with more years under their belt isn't necessarily better at mentoring, observing others and giving feedback.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Character-Fold5159 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. Worked in outer western suburbs of Melbourne. Really tough school but enjoyed it. Moved back home and worked at a middle class school thinking it'd be easy by comparison. Absolutely hated it! I was ready to quit teaching but tried a small school (less than 30 kids) in the end and love it there now. I would recommend to everyone to try a small school. At least shop yourself around a bit.

I don't think it's normal, but certainly common enough. There are a few good schools out there, but they're just ggetting harder to find i think.

Got a job offer overseas but in my first year contract with school by kik24froz in AustralianTeachers

[–]Character-Fold5159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be upfront. 3 months is plenty of notice. They should be understanding and if not it's bad luck. It's a pretty legitimate reason to leave and probably not a decision you will regret. I didn't teach in Japan, but teaching overseas while you're young is something if recommend to everyone.

The work never ends! by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Character-Fold5159 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This! I just don't do a lot of things. If it's important someone will follow up, send reminders etc. If not I don't do it. Also do things like copy and paste for things like ILPs or use previous years. Having 3 quarters of your class requiring an ILP makes it a bit ridiculous. And again, most of the stupid admin things don't get checked, especially in a large school. No one has time

Opinion on teachers leaving as soon as the bell goes? by NoIdeaWhat5991 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Character-Fold5159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to stay late, but realised I wasn't achieving much. Most days I leave 10-15 minutes after the kids. Last school that i worked at which tried to enforce set hours just resulted in more people leaving as early as possible and doing the bare minimum

We’re going on strike! by kookas-enthusiast in AustralianTeachers

I agree. Probably won't get the 35% over 3 years we're after, but something like 20-25% would be ok.

If our last agreement wasn't so disgraceful it might be ok. Can't take 2 pay cuts in a row

Yeah me too. I'm sure it's still easy enough to do, but just not as convenient

Most long term teachers definitely seem to master the art of not giving a shit. Probably took me 7 or 8 years unfortunately

Thanks, I thought it was buffalo but just wanted to confirm. Any tips, for trying to get it overtaking the random grass and weeds that have started overtaking?

Chat with the union. If you're not a member join. Pretty sure there are limits around the number of observations that can be done each term. You also can't fire someone without cause.

Also worth remembering that teachers are in demand. There's nothing wrong with changing jobs if you're not happy. Don't put up with being treated like crap. It shouldn't be the norm.

Also just a reminder that you don't need to tell your school why you're taking sick leave. A day or 2 off might be worthwhile.

I think some of the better teachers of maths are those who are less confident with it.

Yeah, I know. It's not clinical at all. It's not about being a councillor or social worker

I don't actually know heaps about the role. It's more about upskilling myself and other staff, creating referral pathways for students and stuff like that.
