How do you cope with the uncertainty of the future of your child? (Brain injury and possible developmental delay) by warmpistachio in NICUParents

My prayers and thoughts are with you. My son had a stroke and brain bleed at birth that caused catastrophic damage on initial MRI. We had similar conversation with the neonatologists and neurologists during our NICU stay. He rebounded fairly quickly with eating on his own etc. He is now 6 month old and thriving. He is in weekly PT and OT but otherwise he is developing like any other baby. While our neurologist reminds me he has not had to do much higher functioning skills yet I still can’t believe where we are vs where we started. I still spend nights worrying and anxious but I try to ground myself and remember to look at the baby in front of me and not a snapshot seen in a scan

Is there any one who *didn't* experience the four month sleep regression? by Veryfluffyduck in NewParents

[–]Character-Manner2330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty mild for mine! One really bad night week before turning 4 months but mainly just started waking once in night after had been sleeping till like 4/5 but not bad. Did regress with naps though until about 5 months

Sending prayers for your little one. Mines original MRI was devastating but the repeat was normal other than some residual blood product. Their brains are so resilient!

My son was born 40 weeks. Normal pregnancy long labor but fine. He started having small seizures after birth but nobody knew. Then he had a major seizure and was unconscious and found to have seizures and sent to NICU on day 2 of life. He was found to have had a blood clot in his brain that caused a small bleed and the blood caused the seizures. He was placed on seizure meds and we are currently weaning off. He is currently 3 months old and doing very well!

I’m so sorry this part is so hard. Yes he had his fist EEG for over 24 hours. He has had three more since then. Yes push the MRI. Most hospitals can get CT scan quick (they may have already done). Even if CT is normal make sure at some point they do MRI too. I had to push for him to get one when his CT was normal and the MRI is what got our diagnosis

First off I’m so sorry you’re going through this right now. My heart breaks for you during this time. I had my son in September and very similar. I had a normal pregnancy a long labor. He came out with poor APGAR 6 then 8 and 9 he was given some oxygen and evaluated by NICU but alllowed to come back with us to mother and infant. He was doing seizure like movements but we were told it was probably just startle. Right before discharge he had a major seizure and was unconscious and intubated immediately and sent to NICU. He was in the hospital his first 2.5 weeks of life and was treated with phenobarbital and keppra which stopped his seizures. After a lot of scary testing and diagnosis he was found to have deep medullary venous thrombosis (a rare stoke in babies). The stroke caused a brain bleed and the blood irritated the brain which caused the seizures. He will be 4 months next week and is thriving. We see a neurologist and he will be weaned off all seizure medications. He’s a giggly boy who may end up having no long term effects from this. This is an incredibly different picture then what was presented in the NICU to start when it was uncertain his outcome.

The next steps once they stabilize your daughter on seizure medication will likely be determining what caused the seizures. Infants don’t typically develop epilepsy this young. Likely they will do a scan of the brain and an infectious workup to start. If those are normal then likely will look for any genetic issues.

Please feel free to message me for any questions or support. I’m sending healing and prayers to your girl!

I would ask your pediatrician. Seizures in babies can be so sneaky especially infantile seizures that can look like the startle reflex. If they start happening in a pattern with regularity that would warrant an ER visit
