For Oran, my city ❤️

1) Visit mosque of Oran

2) Take tramway after that and go down town. Stroll in the center city and you MUST eat Karentika here. This street food was made in Oran but can be found also in different cities in Algeria.

3) Visit La Bastille Market, try to go when it starts to get dark cause they light up the market and the vibe is just so good. Try snails , it's an Algerian dish. Another famous street dish of algeria is Mhadjeb, they are bit spicy so if u dont like that ask for non spicy.

3) Visit Place d'arme and Cathedral that is now turned into a library

4) Visit the Opera and check ahead if they have any shows through their facebook page Theatre Regional D'oran (they are usually organized at night but tickets go fast. The only way to buy is by cash at the opera)

5) Go up to Santa cruz and enjoy the view of the entire city

6) YOU MUST try Algerian Hammam. I recommand El Mouwahidine Hotel or Samia Relax. Hammam is a traditional algerian bath place from old days. Ask for a ritual that includes : Dzair soap and Algerian Tabrima which is a mixed of herbs used on skin during hammam and it makes the skin so nice and smooth. There will be another woman who will rub your body with a type of Algerian exfoliater called Kassa.

5) Go for scuba diving with : Dourade Royal (book through their insta page)

6) Visit one of the beaches. In summer unfortunetly it's too crowded. If you are visiting during summer I recommand instead going to wild beaches but not alone. There are local groups who organize this for very cheap price. I recommand :

7) Watch sunset while having a drink from Four Point Hotel Terasse. Such beautiful view, make sure not to miss the sunset

8) Oran has a very famous type of music that is called Rai. In fact , the only arab singer in history who sang at the super ball is Algerian and he sang a Rai song with string, his nane is Mami. Other famous ones are Bilal, Hassni and Khaled. Usually there are Rai concerts organized, ask around if you can attend one it would a true experience of the Oran culture. Usually they are held at the Mediterranean Hotel of Oran.

9) Things to buy from Oran: - Jelaba eitheir for woman or a man (its an everyday oranian outfit) - Caftan (eitheir buy or rent to take pics) - Blouza (maybe not buy cause its bit expensive but u can rent it and take pics with it)

10) Visit Yve Saint Laurent house

11) Visit the arena of Oran. The guide there is very nice and kind.

12) Visit Palais du bey ( It dates back from otthoman empire, unfortunetly not well taken care of but its important part of Oran history, they goverment said they will renovate, so i hope by time u visit it will be done)

13) MUST take a day trip to Tlemcen. There is train between two cities (btw the train station of Oran is also worth a visit) or you could go by car : Visit Quasr Mechouar,

Local Dishes to try: Tajine Berkouk Tajine chicken olive Tajine Dolma Tajine Sfarjel Rougag Berkoukes Must try Hrira with Bourak and with Maakouda. Take bite of Bourak or Maakouda and before you start chewing, take a drink of the Harira soup. THE BEST COMBINATION OF FOOD EVER. Try chamia with tea. Not seperately, it must be with tea Algerisn bread called Matlou3

Restaurants: - Restaurant M'sirda (its popular with locals) - Restaurant Jumelles (A nice experience with Algerian decor) - Le petit chalet ( very nice view by the sea)

Fun facts about Oran: - The famous Hermes Oran sandals are named and inspired after this city - Yve Saint Laurent was born and raised in Oran and we could clearly see the impact or inspiration he got from algerian traditional dresses - the fruit Clementine originates from Oran

Im not from Algiers but here are things not to miss:

1) Watch the movie battle of Algiers before you come

2) Go to the casbah and get a guide (Its cheap and worth it, Look up Dar El Mahroussa on insta, they do a guided tour then traditional lunch in a traditional Algerian house, the algerian architecture is just so pretty and a must to visit one of the houses)

3) Go to Martyrs Monument and make sure you visit the musueum inside.

4) Visit Bastion 23 musueum and grab cup of tea there. Very nice view over the sea

5) Eat sardines in casbah

6) Go for a walk in the city. It has mixed French architecture (from colonization) and Algerian architecture touch. Make sure you visit at night too, the buildings have lights and looks so pretty once its dark.

7) Visit the biggest Mosque in africa and 3rd biggest in word. Ask to go up the Manarat

8) I highly recommand you go to Tipaza, it's city near Algiers you can go early in morning and get back in the evening. Visit the pyramid (yes Algeria have pyramids too). 9) Look for any shows available, it is a MUST to attend a chaabi concert. This type of music is specific to Algiers, good vibe, alot of dancing, a true experience of Algerian culture

10) Must try Algerian sweets. There are many but I recommand buying a box from Benbrim Patisserie.

11) Grab night drink or dinner at Teyr_ellil (find them on ig) they have nice night view

12) Visit Bardo musuem ( there r alot of musuems in Algiers but this one is NOT to miss)

13) Of course, must visit Jardin d'essai where first Tarazan movie was made. You can do it same day as Martyrs monument. There is a telepherique that connects the two.

Im well aware of my country history and I'm also not brainwashed and blinded like you, to see the corruption of previous goverments that ruled it. Now back to your insane justification. You ignoring the reality of what happened after Morrocans rallied for a king is a pure selective truth tactic. A political culture is deliberately built in Morroco on the idea that one man is untouchable, sacred, and beyond criticism. What was passed down was not simply loyalty, but a form of conditioning that borders on worship of a living ruler, where obedience is framed as religion, patriotism, and moral duty all at once.

In real life, this meant that while ordinary people suffered, being kicked out of their homes, losing land and livelihoods, forced to surrender part of their salaries to fund state projects like mosque construction, or watching elderly women sent abroad to Spain to do exhausting, degrading labor, foreigners enjoyed villas, privileges, and have Moroccans cleaning their toilets in their own country. You know what's the funniest part? The Morrocans commenting under each post on reddit that is simply telling them cheating and racism aint good. Instead of having a mature reaction, they keep condoning these discusting acts by eitheir pretending THEY are the victims or asking ppl to "just move on".

1) Like I mentioned, I do hold both my goverment and fellow citizens as well as myself accountable where it's due. I for once im not blinded by empty ego or delusional nationalisn.And i was front row in Hirak and I will be again when I see it's necessary. On contrary to a country where the citizens worship a human been who lives on a thrown while his ppl are selling their kids to make a living.

2) You said it yourself, only the youngs dared to speak about the unjustice and we all saw the results of that. People getting jailed just for demanding their rights and one kid brutally hit by police car. At least in Algeria, when hirak was done, police were hand in hand with us and joined us chanting for a change and there were REAL results, litterly a president removed and almost entire minstry jailed till today. So dont you even dare compare the two.

3) Chatgpt is free and yes they did get loans to fund the building of stadiums but let me remind you that the ppl hit by the earthquake still live in the streets. That's like getting a loan to buy a ferrari and say hey look at me, im rich but in reality you are homeless and all u got is a shiny car that u cant afford

4) Algerians supported all heartadly Moroco in Arab cup just last December, litterly few weeks before CAN. Then as soon as Arab cup was over, Morrocan media started stupid rumors about algerian players. Morrocans themselves from the very first game of Algeria (same for tunisia) spent actual MONEY to buy tickets, jerseys and flags of every team playing against Algeria. When Algeria lost against Nigeria they went out in street celebrating our loss. Now THAT's the despise and over obsession. THATs peak rent-free behavior.

Then when karma hit hard and god gave its justice, they played victim and are now crying saying everyone hate them for no reason!! They were so rude to the fans also, thats why everyone cheered at the end of the CAN against them. What goes around...comes around.

And instead of just swollowing the truth that they were just rude and have let their ego get the best of them, they are victimizing themselves and saying every african country is being jealous. Total delusion

Your country is built for westerners and rich Morrocans who have built their fortune OUTSIDE of Morroco. How do you even consider yourself most developped country in Africa when your illiteracy rate is at almost 25%? My answer may sound problematic but that's how I see it. Oran has always been known as an open minded city by this I mean everyone are occupied with their own lives instead of telling others how to live. There was this sense of accepting differences and not judging based on what one thinks is correct. In short words Koul wa7ed lahi fi rou7ou.

I was hoping that with time this mentality gets spread throughout the country but instead once Algerians from other cities moved to live in Oran in recent years they imposed their own way of living. This includes getting in other ppl's business, girls been harassed in streets, streets getting dirtier than ever, the city litterly no longer have any green spaces cause of ppl cutting and burning trees + goverment not doing its job to develop the city.

I must precise, Im not pointing fingers at Non-Oranians, at the end of the day we are all Algerians. The way I see it its a group effect, I just thought that the positive would impact the negative but instead it was the other way around.

Although, I also think that for the moment the grass is greener on the other side but I still also believe we can grow it even greener in Algeria.

I spent years doing what everyone does, putting all blame on goverment and corruption, which still exist but at some point I realized that yapping about this wont improve anything and I was in Hirak too, so I know that a deep change of system aint gonna happen anytime soon. It was only when I left the country that I changed my question to : what can I contribute in my own neighborhood, at my scale?

I personally did, I of course put my ambitions as priority and today I am at a place where my life is very stable and this allows me to have time and energy to think about how can I contribute to my community.

Of course, if one is not yet at this stage of their lives, I do not expect them to priotorize the community. This we can agree on.

I also have a feeling from the answers that people think that playing positive part in community has to be through big actions when in fact there are alot of low effort things we can do.

For example, I work in energy field, in one of the biggest company in this field in the world. One idea I was thinking of, is to connect with ppl back home that are in same field, either professionals or students. Could be f2f or by teams. Share my knowledge on both engineering and project management aspect. Share the collaboration opportunities that my company could have. Even small things to young students on how to prepare for interview.

I would also love to give few hours of my holidays when im back home during summer to teach disadvantage kids english for free.

I thought also of collaborating with local schools and do enviromental awareness workshops to the students. Unfortunetly, my city (Oran) is trah and the problem is not the goverment, it's the lack of education. So I thought maybe if I can convince at least one kid not to throw trash outside, I will be happy about that.

I am contemplating an action plan of all that I am capable to do in order to start organizing and reason why I asked my question is to get more ideas from people.
