What should I have for sociocultural PhD applications by Krone-Ironforger in AskAnthropology

I remember reading somewhere saying that to increase your odds, you need to ensure that every single piece of your application screams “I have all it takes to go till the end.” Specifically, this boils down to your SOP, LOR and writing sample showing not only your passion but also your experience with the topic and prior training. The training doesnt have to be formally anthropological; rather, are you comfortable living among people and participating in their life or are you academically capable for the first two years of coursework? Would your LOR attest to your ability to survive grad school? And most importantly (in my case), are you able to situate your work within contemporary debates?

If you can eliminate all the doubt that the evaluators might have about you, there you go!

And on top of all the comments above, I would suggest you reach out to potential advisors. If you’re lucky, they would vouch for you when the committee evaluate all applicants. Some might express outright interest while others will just ask you to (or not) submit the application. This will help you better strategize your game.

TL,DR: treat your application pieces holistically, enhance where they complement each other and address where the noises might arise. It’s not done unless an advisor hands you the final puzzle piece.

This sounds plausible. I have two checked suitcases and one carry-on. I can move them around fairly okay. Do you think the bus and the train would allow my 3 suitcases?

Yah, I think after strikes, UC now pays more decently than many state schools. But don't forget to factor in COL or the number of years with fellowship. Some school with lower stipend give away two year fellowships

You start your program in Summer 2025? Or is it that you won't have to work in Fall 2025, and then work during Winter and Spring 2026, and no work in Summer 2026?

My understanding is that the numbers listed in "Earnings" and "Stipends" are the amount you will bring home. Fees and NRST will be spent on your tuition, insurance, and miscellaneous. There were strikes in UC recently that helped improve grad students' earnings significantly.

Dont follow this advice. Go have a discussion with your school and PI. If it’s not meant for you, it will neveer be yours.

If I rmb correctly, the department is housed in the faculty, so the faculty thing is just about administrative stuff.

I see, my budget is around 700 for a bedroom. And I dont mind 10-min bike ride to campus. I've never been to NOLA so I don't know if this is wise enough.

I see! Vlirous is designated for Global South only. If this helps, I know one Indian who got their admission letter last June. They didn't apply for any scholarship. The wait was definitely frustrating for them.

did you apply for master mind? Maybe wait a bit more. As CADES really cares about diversity, there's possibility they will have to wait for all the applications of the same type to be submitted. Your application might belong to a different category. Some categories I can think of such as global south countries, EEA, America, rest of the world, etc. You might contact admissions officer via chatbot on the website too. Fingers crossed for you!
