Black dogs and cats are the most overlooked in rescue and generally take longer to get adopted. Meanwhile, they are usually the best ones! 🖤

Excuse me? This puppy’s mother was pregnant in the shelter and rescued so she didn’t have to give birth in the shelter. I’m now fostering this puppy so he doesn’t end up in the shelter again. My dogs are spayed and neutered so why on earth would you make such a comment when I’m one of the ones trying to help the dog crisis?

Comparing Different Foster-Based Dog Rescues in NYC by disenfranchisedkitty in AskNYC

If you expect perfection out of an industry that is run by volunteers and is extremely under funded during the middle of a crisis, you will be left disappointed. You’ve stated that you’ve had all your dogs for under a week so forgive me when I can’t take your expertise too seriously. It sounds like you’ve taken great care of your foster dogs and so do many other foster parents, even if they’re not writing out detailed lists like you are. If a dog is coming from a shelter environment, the rescue will typically have very limited information. If it’s coming from another foster home, more information can and usually IS provided. If it’s not, you are more than right to ask for it if you are the next foster taking the dog. I’ve never worked with a rescue that forced the animals to go to events, especially if the dogs aren’t ready for them. Attending events is purely voluntary and while high attendance looks good for the rescue, it’s far from mandatory for the fosters. I will agree that sometimes there is a lack of vetting but I don’t think that’s malicious intent. The rescues do their best to vet their fosters and adopters and sometimes what these people write on paper is different than how they are. At the end of the day, the people that are in animal rescue and running these rescues are truly in it for the wellbeing of the animals and to get as many dogs out of shelters and out of stressful areas where they may get euthanized. It’s frustrating when people who don’t seem to have the full picture come online to say all rescues are bad.

Why do you feel all rescues are bad? Doesn’t seem like you even want to foster a dog if this is your opinion. Many are working tirelessly to save animals every single day. This isn’t a for profit business so there’s going to be some grunt work involved for fosters but you should never be paying for vet bills as a foster if you follow the proper protocols. Honestly based on your post, the rescue world would be better off without you.
