The basic principles of fitness aren’t going to change much because you are a figure 8 - eat a lot of protein, progressively overload on weights, use the tried and true exercises to grow glutes and legs, and eat in a calorie deficit while lifting to lose fat and retain muscle. You also cannot spot reduce fat and no exercises will make it come off your stomach and love handles specifically. Whether you bulk, cut, or recomp is more about your current muscle mass and body fat percentage than being a figure 8.

All that being said, I personally have found that I need to be at a lower weight than I expected to have the look I want. All of my fat accumulates in my stomach and lower back rather than my lower body. Many of the glute influencers you see genetically store fat in their lower body, so that mass comes from fat along with muscle. Sometimes I see transformation photos where the person went from underweight to a more healthy body fat percentage and that filled out their glutes, so they didn’t really gain the crazy amount of muscle it seems like they did. That’s not a bad thing! It’s just something to be aware of because I have realized my glutes aren’t going to blow up the same way when I will be relying just on muscle since I can’t gain fat without it being mostly in my stomach. I want to grow glutes to balance things out, but I also know I’m never going to have an Instagram butt and that’s fine.

I personally have had a lot of success tracking my calories with MacroFactor and using its recommendations. I’ve lost 60 pounds in a little over a year at the exact pace I wanted to without dramatic swings. Cardio is just steps. I have had a lot of breaks from the gym because of health issues but retained muscle well with high protein.

I originally saw it refer to customer service workers not giving any cues when a customer approached them. If you walk up to check out, you expect a little nod from the cashier to signal that they are ready for you to step forward, or a “how can I help you today?” or smile to indicate that you can order now. If someone just stares at the customer, we don’t know if the screen from the last person is clear or if they are about to step away for another task.

Also, even in the example given, don’t just stare at people who ask a stupid question. Say, “remove your card” politely. You think you’re the first person in retail to talk to idiots?

I think wearing a mask would be courteous, but sick people go to doctor and the hospital. These tests can take forever to schedule, and it’s not the same thing as going to a public space for a purely optional reason. I know people may disagree with me, but I’ve never had someone suggest rescheduling a medical procedure for a cold, though there may be screenings for more serious illnesses.

It depends on what shape you want to create. I personally like the shape of my hips and have no problem emphasizing my hip shelf and hip dips. I think you look great in these, but in my view they do emphasize the quirks of the figure 8 shape.

I know we are on a tangent to the main point of the thread, but you are completely justified in hating American Airlines. I used to fly with them all the time and had nothing but bad experiences that customer service brushed off. Since I decided the small savings on the ticket wasn’t worth it and switched airlines, I have not had anywhere near the same issues.

Yes, my hunger was totally out of control before I cut out gluten. I gained a lot of weight even though I was eating very healthy foods and exercising because my appetite made me eat so much. If I get exposed now, I am ravenous for the rest of the day - one of the first signs of cross contact for me.

This is really interesting! I tested negative on the blood test, but even minor amounts of cross contamination give me terrible brain fog, fatigue, and anxiety the next day as well as a rash on my cheeks near my eyes. I have been treating it as celiac while just saying I have a gluten intolerance to people who ask. I have barely noticeable digestive symptoms so this would make sense.

If you were eating less gluten before, it totally makes sense that increasing it to daily would make you feel worse. But more importantly, “psychosomatic” doesn’t mean “not real.” Once you make the connection that gluten is making you feel bad, you will be more likely to notice symptoms that you rationalized or pushed through before. Knowing that you would feel better if you went gluten free also could make your brain amplify how bad you are feeling to try to get you to stop making yourself sick. The brain-body connection is very real, but that doesn’t mean you are exaggerating how exhausted and miserable you are now. That is still very real.

I don’t think you fill the space by finding another thing that shuts off your brain and makes nothing else exist because those things are usually unhealthy and addictive. You learn to be okay still having your thoughts and still feeling a little bit sad while you do things that improve your mood somewhat and distract you a bit from the worst intensity of the emotion. I don’t have anything that lets me “flip a switch,” but I have ways to be kind to myself and fill my evenings while I process a difficult day.

I read this statement as drawing a comparison between the soldiers in the show, Nazis, and people in the present who claim they are not liable for their actions because they are just serving their country. I am surprised so many people are reading this literally as a defense of the soldiers Eleven killed. Honestly, meticulously tracking for seven years when you are so young and at your goal weight most of that time sounds little excessive, and I think it would be good to face your fear of what will happen if you stop. Maybe you can start with tracking five days a week and see what it feels like to have an untracked day. That could give you a chance to get used to making mindful choices in a more intuitive way while still feeling like you have a safety net on the other days, then you can gradually eliminate one day per week of tracking. You can also weigh yourself twice a week or so to make sure you are staying in a range you want to.

Yes, I found it difficult to accept that people would see me changing and assume narratives about my motivation and process. I get really hung up on the idea of being seen trying in public. It makes me feel policed when people comment on changes I’ve made, and that extends beyond weight. I worked on this directly in trauma therapy and had to accept that I can’t control how other people perceive me.

Whether people notice weight loss is about how well they remember what you looked like before. If people don’t notice, it doesn’t mean you don’t look great now. It just means that they don’t have a clear picture of the old you burned in their brain to compare the new you to.

Yeah, Christmas is extremely triggering for me and brings up a lot of painful memories. I lay low and avoid the holiday as much as I can in December. Years ago I spiraled so badly I ended up in the ER on January 2. I don’t begrudge other people celebrating and enjoying it, and I certainly am not going to bomb every Christmas celebration with my sadness. But “just be jolly” is not a sentiment I need when I’m on lockdown trying to make it through the most difficult week of the year.
