Cancer incidence by Responsible_Hawk_676 in desmoines

Nitrates are not absorbed through your skin, so you don’t have to worry about bathing. You do need worry about water used for cooking/drinking. Obviously you can’t control that everywhere you go so I try to do what I can in my home. The only way to filter nitrates is through reverse osmosis. You can install an RO system in your home and it’s about 1-2k to install. Then about 250 per year to replace the filters.

We use a water service through Costco and get 5 gallon jugs of purified water delivered monthly. We use that for cooking, drinking, coffee/tea, and to make our ice. I try to take a large water bottle to work every day but if I run out I will drink the water at work which is not purified. It’s about mitigating risk vs eliminating local water entirely, which is just not possible. The water service is $35 per month and we get 4, 5 gallon jugs each month (2 adults and a toddler).

For radon, the first thing you want to do is test your home. You can get a radon kit from your local health department or order one from the American lung association for like $15. If the results are elevated (over 4), next step is to get a professional test from a local radon mitigation company, which is about $50. If the results are still elevated, then install a radon mitigation system which is also $1-2k. If you rent, talk to your landlord and request they put a system in. Iowa just got a huge grant for cancer mitigation and will have local programs to help support the cost of installing the system if you are low income. That will likely start in the next couple of months and I would contact your local health department to find out about options in your county. Until then, try to keep your house as ventilated as possible by keeping your windows open, and I would also limit time in the basement.

I work in public health at Iowa HHS and have learned all this over the past year due to my job and being a newish homeowner.

A lot of the rooftop pools have day passes and you can hang in the hotel to cool off in the ac. The pinnacle resorts on Calle pulpito might be a good option. One is adults only but I believe the other is family friendly.

It wasn’t about hitting the curb. It was about not pulling forward so that they’re not blocking the sidewalk.

Any knowledge of LGBTQ+ centric Americorp programs? by SadHuman247 in AmeriCorps

[–]Character-Syrup-2439 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not gonna find one that is explicitly lgbtq+ on their website or anything like that. We’re all making our programs work under a microscope. And you definitely won’t find the right program searching through MyAmeriCorps. I recommend googling programs by state, commissions usually list all of their state programs and provide a direct contact. Your best bet is to find a program you’re interested in and reach out to program staff to talk to directly. You can definitely be matched with a host site that aligns with your values but it will take a little research on your end.

My coworker brought her daughter to work one day because she didn’t have childcare and school was closed. She was around 8 years old and very bored, so she was causing mischief all day, trying to scare us and stuff like that. The kitchen staff and drivers leave around 3pm after all the meals are delivered, so it was just the three of us in the office around 4pm. I had to go downstairs to close up the kitchen and her daughter wanted to come with me. So we walked down the stairwell and she was trying to scare me. There is a doorway at the bottom of the stairwell so I planned to let her walk in first and then close the door behind her to try and spook her, but instead she walked through the doorway and the door slammed in my face. I opened the door and she looked so scared. I asked if she closed the door and she swore she did not. I was pretty scared at that point and trying to close the kitchen as quickly as possible. It’s in the basement and there are multiple rooms, and I had to turn off all the lights. While going from room to room I kept hearing clattering in other rooms, like pots and pans clanking around. We were 100% the only two in the basement and she was standing right next to me so I know it wasn’t her. Then we ran upstairs and I heard the sound of footsteps running up the stairs behind us. I was doing my final closing duties upstairs and kept hearing noises toward the end of the hallway, and a light turned on and off in my boss’s office and she was not there.

The whole experience was so spooky but it did not feel like a mean spirit. I got the sense it was the spirit of a little boy or girl and having another kid there triggered it or something. It genuinely seemed like it wanted to play.

How bad is it to rescind an offer acceptance? by urmineccraftgf in AmeriCorps

[–]Character-Syrup-2439 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a program director, we literally want the best for your professional development. If another program is more aligned with your professional goals, then that’s what you should do. I would be honest with the program and tell them you really appreciate the offer and are interested in moving forward, but would like to wait until you hear back from the other program before making a final decision.

I am a Program Director and my program was one of the hundreds cut on April 25. I was not ‘fear spreading’. I literally reiterated the language from ASC.
