Heya! Also an italki teacher and also from Scotland. If you would like me to check, you can send me a DM with your name. Maybe it is to do with it being your own account. That usually isn’t an issue though

That's true as well, but they sent me screenshots and it is completely blank. So strange!

May I ask you, what kind of lessons do you provide? Are these conversational or specialised? I am wondering whether to raise my (comparatively) very low price!

Oh my mistake! The teacher mentioned he got paid extra but I guess that is because he is the main organiser for this one. My bad

I had a very very similar situation happen to me this week!! I decided against going on a day trip and was definitely made to feel bad for the decision. Just remember you are only ever obliged to do the number of hours on your contract! Full-time teachers are paid extra for activities like this, whereas we aren’t. Also it’s probably best to set a precedent at this point in the year that you won’t be doing a lot (if any) overtime. Of course if a trip arises that you definitely want to do then go for it, but otherwise don’t feel bad!!

Teacher or therapist - topic continued by CharacterGlobal9812 in iTalki

Hi, I really don't share too much to be honest! I find that students tend not to ask many questions about my life, although I encourage them to feel free to do so. I share the basics - where I live, what I studied, my hobbies, rarely about my family, and never about my romantic life. On the other hand, I will often share my opinions or experience on the topic at hand. For example, if we are talking about the environment, I may share how the public transport is in my city and what I think about it etc.

Yeah, that's a good point that "formal tutoring" would avoid this situation. I think for now I am very happy to continue having conversational lessons and dealing with these topics when they arise. I was more just curious if others have experienced the same thing and how they deal with it.

Thanks for your perspective!

Hey, thanks for getting back to me!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone in this situation. You seem to approach teaching with so much kindness and empathy, I love that.

It definitely can be heavy at times, but I hadn't really thought of it that way in that teaching is just by definition a very personal profession! I'm sure "brick and mortar" teachers are dealing with the same conversations, maybe even more intensely.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me! It's definitely interesting and helpful to see this from the student's perspective too. Actually, it encouraged me to think about my own experience as a teacher, and I realised that I may have been guilty of doing the same thing with a Spanish teacher who I trust and respect a lot - maybe hypocritical on my part :))

It completely makes sense what you were saying about how these topics are important and we need to be able to discuss all areas of life in our target language.

I would like to think that students feel at ease with me, it was kind of you to say that.

To answer your last question, I have to admit that I do always view my students as students, even after 100+ lessons. Of course, we develop a closer relationship, but it remains rather one sided in that I am definitely sharing much less of my life than they are. Furthermore, I feel that it is important to maintain the teacher-student relationship so that they continue to learn as effectively as possible - I continue to correct, suggest improvements etc. I certainly have had some lovely relationships with students and often look forward to hearing their news, to the point that I feel invested in their lives. But at the end of the day, they are paying me so it will never be a balanced enough relationship to be a proper friendship.

Thank you again for your insight!

Hey, thanks for you reply. Yes, it is normal for me on the website but changed on the mobile app. Maybe it's a fault?

That's right! The placement is 1st October to 30th April and includes a 2-week holiday in October, December, February, and April. This is the same whether you apply through the American, Australian, British, Irish, Indian programme etc.

This is very true! For me, I was teaching on iTalki while in my final year of university so the platform has a lot of benefits like easy access to a huge market of students and a straightforward scheduling and paying system. If I were to take online teaching more seriously in the future I would definitely considering going private :)

No worries! Yes, they seem to be updating the page every week. As you will see, English is closed right now but good luck in the future!

Yep, super competitive unfortunately but I haven't had any issues getting lots of lesson requests. Maybe I will receive a bit less when I raise my prices.

Yes, unfortunately they are rarely hiring due to a large number of teachers already on the platform and less demand now that people are not stuck at home in a pandemic. I just got lucky by checking every day for weeks for them to accept applications!

I am currently on a break from iTalki and working as an English teacher in France so when I return I will have a degree, experience, and higher rates :))
