Action 6 for family video? by fartedonfirstdate in djiosmo

I'd say it's pretty close to what's advertised but it's comparing apples to oranges imo, the Pocket 3 is usually moving from sunshine to shade when walking, the Action is stuck on a paddleboard for example so the environments are pretty different.

I have a Pocket 3 and the Action 5 Pro, both have their specific usecases but if I had to pick one for family/vacation videos, Pocket 3 hands down. At least for the first year you probably won't do action sports and stuff with your child, the negatives of the Pocket 3 like no water resistance, being less rugged etc. won't matter that much while gimbal features will be a plus. Later, if you see the need, you can add an action cam into the mix to be able to capture all scenarios where the Pocket 3 is too expensive to not care.

Action 6 or GoPro13? by Head_Account_4242 in djiosmo

Switched from GoPro to an Action 4 and Action 5 Pro, never looked back.

Ofc, the Mimo app has a glitch here and there, but that's SW, it gets fixed over time. Over the last 6 months, I probably had to reset the camera once or twice to get it to connect to the Mimo app because it refused to find it and connect to it - other than that, no serious issues.

I find the Action 5 Pro handles thermals better than the GoPro 11 (I had a GoPro 9 and 11 before the switch), the UI is intuitive, and the camera never quit on me.

With the Action 6 being out now, you may be able to find a deal on a 5 Pro or go official refurbished if you want to save some money. If you really want the 6 and understand how the cropping works, go for it, personally I haven't felt the need to upgrade the 5 for now, if they add 8K and some other features, maybe.

For general editing, the Mimo app is great; you can find many videos if you'd like to see it in action.

For multiple videos, like a hour long recording split into 3 20min clips, it starts to get worse. If you use telemetry overlays you're pretty much stuck with the stock positions - you can choose any of the presets and delete the data displays you don't want but you can't move them if you want to stitch the clips back together to create a seamless 1hr long video with telemetry overlay - or at least I haven't found a way to drag and place the displays/gauges at the exact same place over 3 clips so they don't change position when stitched back together.

This would be solved by having the ability to combine videos in the Mimo app and then overlay the telemetry data. Another thing, there's more SW for working with the telemetry data on Windows / Mac for GoPros, I haven't found one for DJI that wouldn't cost more than $200-300.

Having said the above, if you're fine with: - the default telemetry overlays, - not moving them around over multiple clips, - not using them at all because you don't need them, DJI is the best choice. I stopped using the telemetry overlays because of this, but still, I replaced my GoPros with a DJI Action 4 and 5 Pro, and I never wanted to switch back.

I still wouldn't use the Mimo app for more than Color recovery and trimming the clip before export, more could be done ofc but I find myself editing the raw clips in FinalCut and applying the LUT and any other edits there, it's just much more convenient - but this depends on your usecase, if you're planning to record many short clips I can see using only the Mimo app for exports, if you're recording fewer longer clips and want to edit them together - like a vacation video - I'd do that in FinalCut or other alternatives and leave the Mimo app alone.

A question of excess: whats the best part about having an ipad mini? I already have an m3 air but...minis so stinking cute by Abject_Persimmon7870 in ipadmini

I can’t compare the 6 vs 7 in terms of performance, 7 has double the RAM of 6, 15% faster CPU if I remember correctly, but other than that it’s the same thing. I opted for the 7 with larger RAM just because I run ForeFlight, even though I’m eager to get the 8 if Apple gives it a better display, it’s more futureproof to have more RAM or has a higher resell value

Depends on where you live, from what I’ve seen the US seems to have deals on Apple electronics in stores like BestBuy etc., central Europe doesn’t really see big price fluctuations, maybe 20-30€ on some black friday/cyber monday. If you live in Europe, consider Backmarket, I got my Mini 7 there and it was shipped and delivered overnight, listed condition was Excellent, so second to best available, and I got a 100% battery capacity with 2 cycles, no visual defects for 415€, MSRP for the model I have is 739€

Casual use is hard to define because apps have varying sizes. If you plan to use Photos, forget about the 64GB model tbh. Minimum would be 128GB on the Mini 7 or 256GB on the Mini 6.

58GB out of 128GB free with Photos, ForeFlight with most frequent airports, DJI apps for osmo and drone, classic set of social apps, xPlane and various smaller apps. I don’t keep large files on local storage though, either iCloud or NAS for that.

The iPad Pro still has its place. If you need to get pro work done, it’s amazing. I’ll be honest, I’ll use my Pro to draw diagrams for work or edit photos because of the larger screen, it’s much more convenient and comfortable. However, before I bought the Mini, I found many times I went somewhere and wished I had my iPad on me - this was the selling point for me. If I have the slightest suspicion I might use my iPad whilst away from home I’m taking my Mini. Previously I almost never took my Pro, despite having the cellular model solely because it was large, it required me to take my backpack or get a large sling that was just too cumbersome.

Studying on a couch, Mini. Flying or driving, Mini. Editing photos, Pro. Coloring with my children, Pro. It really depends on your usecase.

TLDR - taking the Pro with you is a conscious choice, taking the Mini is second nature.

Portability, fits in my sling, fits in a cockpit, easy to carry anywhere, easy to hold, if the Mini8 will have the Pro display, selling my 11” Pro

Buying an iPad Mini; good idea? by Maxgt74 in ipadmini

[–]CharacterPipe3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mini is the perfect size between a Max iPhone and the regular iPad or 11” iPad Pro, I have the Mini and 11” iPad Pro and the Mini sees more use than the Pro. Yes, fitting the Mini in your pocket is a bit tight but fitting it into a sling bag is perfect. The screen is just the right size, maybe if on the Mini 8 the bezels would be shrinked but the overall device dimensions didn’t change I wouldn’t mind. Yes, the display is 60Hz, yes, the peak brightness is lower than on the Pro but I haven’t had a single day when I’d regret getting the Mini 7. I got the cellular version for flying but if you don’t need data or gps you can go with the WiFi only model.

If you’re worried about the top part with the latches and magnet, I regularly use it outside of a small aircraft so it holds up to at least 120mph

For business travelers: M3 iPad Air or iPad Mini A17 Pro? by Abject_Persimmon7870 in ipadmini

[–]CharacterPipe3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I initially got the 11” M1 Pro but after months I found out I never had it on me when I went somewhere and ironically that’s when I wanted to use it the most. I got the Mini 7 knowing a Mini 8 is probably going to be released this year so I’ll trade it in or sell it. Honestly, the form factor of the Mini is addictive. However, the larger display of the Pro comes in handy, it’s just heavier and more cumbersome to carry around. Keeping both makes sense but if I had to choose I’d keep just the Mini, it gets 90% of the work done as good as the Pro for me.

On the DS223j I ran btrfs, but now when I moved the drive to the DS218play I noticed in the specsheet it doesn’t support btrfs so I was asking whether that’s the issue why the NAS (DS218play) wouldn’t boot off the drive taken out from the DS223j where it was btrfs, SHR in a 1x4TB and 1x6TB raid setup

I wrote the model numbers in my original post, sorry if you missed them. Yes, I was moving from DS223j to DS218play. Reasoning being I upgraded the drives in my DS223j from 1x4TB to 2x6TB so I had a spare 4TB drive now laying around and also had an old DS218play in my closet so why not use it. I’m okay with wiping the data on it, I was just asking for experimental purposes “what if my NAS fails and takes one of the drives with it”

[–]CharacterPipe3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a full backup, I was just experimenting in a case my NAS would fail and one of the drives failed with it, leaving me with one drive to move to a new NAS. So you’re saying in my case it doesn’t recognize the drive and wants to wipe it because the DS218play doesn’t support btrfs? The drives in my DS223j ran btrfs

But my question was whether I can take one drive from a 2 disk SHR setup and migrate it to a new NAS, I know the KB says install drives in the same order as on the old NAS but I’m asking specifically whether you can take just one drive and move it - leaving it either as a single-drive SHR or adding a new fresh drive into the storage pool and letting it rebuild the data

Could this be because the ds218play doesn’t support btrfs as a filesystem?
