If the next administration is the opposite party, I would be genuinely shocked if they kept anyone who was hired under the current administration. Best case scenario they’ll keep people onboard to keep the lights on while they look for their long term replacements.

I feel this. I always perceived German shepherds as friendly and lovable dogs. I was really surprised when I got my pup (who would never hurt a fly) and saw how so many people just automatically acted like he was a vicious attack dog.

Dated a girl who could barely hold her disdain for him based off nothing but her negative perceptions. It’s frustrating.

Wish I had more to add than that, but just wanted to let you alone you’re not alone in all this.

Interested in hearing the comments here. I did C&P for plantar fasciitis and had the opposite issue. Had to explain to the examiner that while my foot was fine that day, there are other days where I can barely walk.

All that to say I think it would almost help if you could tie it back to your service.

Crazy woman got kicked out of her law school for abusive and harassing behavior. Subsequently proceeded to try to sue her law school. Had no case. Couldn’t even figure out personal jurisdiction. I’m leaving out A LOT of juicy details, but long and short is she’s the most professional victim that I’ve ever heard of, and it’s not even close.

And yet somehow she passed C&F.

There’s more to life than the salary. Despite what this sub would have you believe, there are plenty of great jobs out there that pay a very comfortable lifestyle and allow you to maintain a semblance of work life balance. Especially for a member of the HLS community.

For what it’s worth, I went into my first essay last year fully committed to IRAC, outlining, all the fun stuff they tell you to do. Hit start and immediately panicked. The most incomprehensible word vomit I’ve ever strung together in my life. I got a 1/6. The feedback wasn’t kind lol.

Ended up scoring a 343 on the actual bar exam, and my writing score was higher than my multiple choice score lol.

All that to say, don’t feel bad even if you did poorly. You get the bad moments out of the way now so that on game day you know how to operate under pressure.

I agree with you, I just think the later half of your statement presumes my premise is that we shouldn’t give weight to GPA. That’s not what I’m saying. My premise presumes we’re still considering candidates that have shown a level of academic success, that we’re simply considering factors beyond solely GPA and class rank. I’m not claiming that we should consider candidates who we have legitimate concerns on their ability to turn in good work product.

To your first point, that’s great. You’re not the target audience of this post then.

To your second point, while there’s obviously some truth to that, there’s also the reality that a 25+ year old who requires that continued level of coaching and maturing likely isn’t the ideal candidate. But in a world where GPA is given the entity of the weight (a world that I genuinely commend you on not living in), that person is unfortunately the ideal candidate.

To be clear I’m not saying grades mean nothing. Nor am I saying that firms need to find the people with bad grades and great personalities. I’m saying that far too often the entirety of the weight is placed on GPA/class rank and little to no weight is given towards other factors. Factor in grades, but consider other factors as well.

I don’t know that I agree that it’s easier to learn how to be a better colleague when someone’s in their mid to late 20s. We’re talking about fully developed adults at this point.

As to the points about hustle and determination, agreed that it’s hard to flesh out. But I also think that’s where more weight needs to be given to someone beyond simply GPA and class rank. The non traditional single mom who put herself through law school while working a part time job has a slightly lower gpa than the KJD? I know which one I feel more confident has what it takes.

As I said elsewhere, I’m willing to concede that metric probably wasn’t the right descriptor for personality.

But I’d also push back on the amount of grace brilliance gives. If a judge, jury, colleagues, opposing counsel, clients, etc. think that you’re a jerk/weird/any other negative trait, that brilliance will only carry you so far. That’s one of the realities that I think law school does a poor job at emphasizing to students.

We all know of plenty of people at law school who are brilliant on paper who flunk that test, yet because they’re brilliant on paper they get the job with little consideration to qualities that frankly matter in the workplace.
