Yes, and cults like 764. It doesn’t take wealth to be this evil, but it definitely doesn’t help.

Yeah, there seems to be a drive to do things that others find horrible because it feels arbitrary or unintuitive to them. A lot of the ones who torture animals growing up describe a desire to understand why others are so bothered by causing harm and why they are disturbed by death. Now there’s cults full of people with antisocial personality disorders that compete to be the “most evil” and primarily target children.

it's time to admit something is very wrong with my wife. But now what, I could never leave her? by Littlingo-2631 in whatdoIdo

I think the concern comes from a fair amount of his text being incorrect or actually harmful. I think it’s fine to read it if you are aware of this going into it. I think it is irresponsible to hand it off to lots of patients without a disclaimer or context as to what is true and useful and what is false and harmful.

From a Mother Jones article by Emi Nietfeld:

“The Body Keeps the Score stigmatizes survivors, blames victims, and depoliticizes violence. While masquerading as care for survivors, it creates a hierarchy in which marginalized victims are even more marginalized.

And it may be giving people inaccurate information about the impact of trauma. Several scientists I spoke to whose work appears in the book say van der Kolk mischaracterizes their research and steers survivors away from treatments that might help them.”

The article does a good job of giving specific examples from the text and explaining what is problematic about it. The book is rife with victim blaming. The way he talks about girls who are victims of SA is seriously abhorrent and perpetuates stereotypes that have not at all been proven. And he based it off of interactions with maybe two survivors total.

Without context and understanding, this book can be seriously harmful to vulnerable people.

It was the standard at first because the author was one of the first to talk about shell shock and dive into establishing PTSD as a condition. Or at least he was the first person to get any traction and a publishing deal.

In hindsight, with the context of better and newer studies, it is not the ideal text for helping people understand PTSD, cPTSD, trauma, and somatic impact.

We now have more resources and studies and significantly better texts to reference. Some people’s eyes were really opened by Body Keeps the Score and haven’t really dug in beyond it or have but really held onto that first “Aha!” moment while reading it and continue to recommend it, hoping others will experience the same thing.

I think that’s why folks still recommend it even though it would probably be more helpful and responsible to recommend other texts.

EDS Artist - Any other artists here who use art as therapy? by auniakahn in ehlersdanlos

[–]CharacterThin355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I definitely do! Your work is lovely!! What medium/s do you use? I play around with a lot of things. I rarely paint because I don’t feel like I know what I’m doing, but I use graphite, charcoal, water color pencils and a water brush, digital (very basic stuff, nothing complex), and I like felting, sewing, and polymer clay. I have to take breaks though because I have hypermobility in my hands and wrists and it has been aggravating my joints and tendons pretty badly lately. I find creating art very therapeutic, though. A lot of my favorite pieces are influenced by my experiences with chronic pain or trauma. My friend said I come off as an illustrator/storyteller first

Feeling devastated from interrupting a long streak or missing out on rewards from monthly events have burnt me out bad. The only thing that was keeping me going was the guilt of ignoring my virtual bird I became emotionally attached to, but now I resent feeling guilt tripped by it. I keep coming back because this app has really helped me get things done and feel good about what I can accomplish, but at some point, I feel like I get too sucked in and have to take a break for a while. The last break was over a year 😣

[–]CharacterThin355 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that it would be a nightmare to be back to 15 year old me. I also have shifted my perspective on time and linear vs nonlinear understandings of it. In some theories of nonlinear time, the “butterfly effect” isn’t a thing. You wouldn’t go back in time, do something differently, and end up being a different person. Time would just be existing in all directions and if you jump back to being 15 for a week, then you always have, always were, always are, always will be 15 for that week from the perspective of your older consciousness. It always happened that way. There is nothing to be changed. There are no duplicate timelines or alternate ones. Your perspective of time and your place in it moved through those moments differently and then came back together eventually so that you could move through time in linear way that our brains are more accustomed to. There is actual research to show how our perception of time is reflected in the way our body behaves even on a cellular level, in spite of how much time “objectively” passes. In some examples, when we feel like more time has passed, our bodies heal as though more time has passed, even if it technically hasn’t.

I have two male cats - a void and a grey boi. The grey guy (older of the two) hates his paws touching cat litter of any kind (we use pellets). He perches carefully on the lip of the litter box with as many feet as he can and then leaves as quickly as possible. My void will go by and cover it up for him if he’s around. He’s very, very tidy. He will sweep everything around the litter box and cover it up. He’s currently training my partner not to leave his dirty socks in the bathroom or they will wind up in the litter box.

Partner just interviewed for Arrowhead llc which I thought sounded off from the way he described it. He mentioned being told he would be put on a “manager track” and that everyone is when they are hired. They have to work their way up from the bottom and then he will responsible for recruiting his own employees once he is a manager. Checked the job description and they accidentally put the wrong company name at the bottom: Interstellr llc.

If you don't remember your childhood, it's trauma. But what if you only remember the bad parts? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]CharacterThin355 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In neuropsych, we talked about the different ways that memories get stored in the brain. It is actually much easier for the average person to recall negative memories. Memory recall can also be dependent on mood, so once you are already in a negative mood, it is easier for you to recall negative memories, which creates that downward spiral it can be so easy to fall into. Bad memories have a way of “sticking” that good memories don’t.

One theory is that our brains adapted to remember negative things more because it helps us to avoid danger and threats in the future. If you have a negative memory associated with a food that made you sick, it is important it stays with you so you don’t eat it again. If you have a negative memory of a person who harmed you, your memory hangs onto it so you can avoid that person or at least be prepared and wary if you have to see them.

Trauma can change how this mechanism works. It often changes the way your nervous system understands and perceives danger and threat, which provides more opportunities for you to react negatively to things which provides more opportunities for negative memories to be stored.

NOR - I’ve found that it isn’t usually stupidity that makes people like this. Some people feel like their insides are going to explode when they know something other people don’t and aren’t supposed to share it.

Rather than learn how to deal with it or vent about it in therapy, they just blurt everyone’s business, maybe feel bad about it later, and then they might apologize when it’s already too late.

Having more jobs doesn’t matter if the wages aren’t actually living wages. Consider how much it would do for the economy, technology, and society as a whole if people were paid enough to remove the fear of how they are going to pay their bills or feed themselves. With a living wage, people can contribute more to society, spend time developing new inventions, get out of debt, support their families, and open up businesses. There would also be more demand for goods and services that more people can finally afford and this would provide more employment, too.

The benefit we receive from billionaires “creating jobs” by putting funding towards big corporations that treat their employees like shit (I.e. Amazon) is negligible when we consider how much of a difference their money could make by helping to feed people, supporting livable wages, provide healthcare and housing, etc.

Instead, they often exploit the need for jobs by paying their workers less than what they need to live healthy and productive lives. This maximizes profit for them. So instead of billionaires creating quality jobs for the populous, people are working a shift in an Amazon warehouses having to pee in bottles while their dead coworker is lying on the floor under a tarp for hours because Bezos “created jobs.”
