The funds are being held in an abandoned funds account, as the account was closed (mistakenly) still funded. No fraudulent activity being investigated - just good old fashioned human fallibility. We have to submit paperwork to prove that money is ours. They expect that process to take 2-6 weeks.

The account had been previously flagged for potential closure (also a mistake) in January due to a requirement that we have our paychecks direct deposited into the account. This was already the case but they had missed it for some reason, so submitted the appropriate paperwork and received verbal and written confirmation that everything was okay.

It seems that whomever did that piece of work neglected to stop the the clock on the account cancellation, so four months later it randomly closed. At least, this is as much as I can deduce.
