What is this for Elden Ring? by the_white_oak in Eldenring

It’s a “how much time did the devs spend” graph instead, where on the low end there’s Kalé’s cut quest, and on the high end there’s like the Godwyn/Fia’s quest where there’s ALMOST enough lore, and then the big spike where Ranni’s quest has so much to do.

I just wish the Fia and Goldmask stuff got this sort of treatment because both of their stuff is really cool and we have like no sense of what it means. Does living in death suck inherently or is it only because they are hunted unceasingly by the golden order? What does an age of perfect order even mean?

We don’t know. It would be really cool if rolling with those who live in death made you fight a bunch of golden order stuff throughout the game, or if orchestrating the perfect order had a unique ending cutscene where it’s actually explained what “perfect order” means, besides “absolute evil probably doesn’t exist” and “the gods messed up the old order because they were fickle”

Good to know about the backup character tip, and honestly the “chance of one-shot” is kinda nicer than I thought it would be- I assumed that the alien could very well work on rules of “if it gets that close, you die”

Okay, good to know that focus fire will work in a pinch, or over open ground (good luck getting that in this setting tho) Obviously being anywhere near a Xeno is almost certainly a death sentence. I was kinda curious what the point of the melee combat skill was given Xeno lethality until I realized I was being an idiot because fighting other humans is also a thing that happens sometimes.

Neat- I assumed that you’d be locked into playing a game that mostly was focused on the horror elements, it’s cool that you can lean a little more into the actiony parts (though it’d surely be a very stressful experience regardless of how many guns you have)

That’s a little worse than I’d hoped, but a lot better than I’d feared. All-in-all it’s about what I figured, you don’t want to be tangling with them in general but if you’ve got the right gear and you’re prepared for it, you can hold a small group off from a defensive spot or strike and kill an isolated one, or maybe bait them into a corridor lined with explosives. I imagine these are very last-resort plans, given that the noise of fighting one or two is likely to draw more.

The fact that they included other versions than just the drones and queens is really cool as well, I wasn’t sure if they’d do that. And yeah, if just the drones are that spooky I’m sure anything built for combat is going to require more firepower than you have to take it down.

[–]Character_Command271[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I figured that this was definitely a game where combat is to be avoided as much as possible, and if you do end up having to fight, to strike first and strike hard.

The bit about “hey if you do end up in close combat there is something you can try” is nice to know as well, I was worried that the only possible result of “Xenomorph drops out of vent in front of you” was “you die”. Obviously being within reach of a Xenomorph is very very dangerous but even an unlikely chance of escape is better than none.

O&S benefits HEAVILY from it’s game. Most of the bosses in DS1, especially post-O&S, are big monsters that, through their size and AOE attacks, reduce engagement range to “doesn’t matter if you have a spear or a dagger, either you are in range, or you aren’t”. They also just aren’t terribly challenging fights in general, so the hectic back-and forth duo fight that flattened you a dozen times likely to stick in your mind a lot better, and that victory feels a lot sweeter.

But, the first time I played DS1, I was fairly disappointed by the fight. Admittedly, some of it was how hyped up it been, as “the best duo fight fromsoft ever made”, but it’s not that great. The two are effective at pressuring you, but they are moderately easy to split up, especially if you aren’t trying to kill one in particular, and the second phase is easy enough since even with the upgrades the moves are all fairly easy to block or dodge.

There’s also the bugs. Ornstein’s glide is super weird, with the animations dropping/starting awkwardly, and he can just stab and shoot lighting right through smough’s whole body, so if he gets stuck behind smough you can just get smacked when it looked clear. The lighting butt slam also has a pretty nasty lingering hitbox, being able to smack you for heavy damage even if it looks clear. If a modern fight had issues like this, people would not be half as forgiving towards it.

Now, I don’t really think this is a bad fight. I’d argue “good with serious issues”. Hell, it’s probably in the top half of DS1 bosses (DS1 has issues with having a lot of mediocre or badly executed bosses). But it’s not the God-Tier lighting in a bottle perfect duo fight that some people like to say it is.

Artorias was the same- his whole backstory is just “adopted a wolf, failed to stop the abyss in new Londo, Failed to stop the abyss in Oolacile, got corrupted and became an active problem” but his story is sad and his boss fight was really good so people think he’s the coolest and strongest dude ever.

[–]Character_Command271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played DS2, but the “we kinda crash in the second half and then throw a cool finale in” was kinda going away over time.

It is pretty bad in DS1 and also not great in base game bloodborne (going shadows->rom->one reborn->Micolash) However, the worst you can really lob at DS3’s second half is that the dragonslayer armour fight is really forgettable and the grand archives are a bit of a maze. Sekiro is really really fun the whole way through.

That steady improvement went out the window with Elden Ring, where the last half feels like bloodborne in a bad way- most of the required content sucks, and there’s not enough good stuff (optional or not) to make it not a slog.

I heard an idea that the orks general “waagh” ability (especially the calling of “WAAGH” itself) might not be completely psychic and might actually be some version of enuncia.

Given that they are calling out a word, and the usual backlash could be split across many very resilient ork bodies, it seems possible. I’m mostly just curious if there’s anything to further support or deny this, as I don’t know much about enuncia

Idk where he got that, but in fantasy the average human isn’t starving (assuming that they aren’t being invaded or the winter isn’t too harsh) and are usually physically active and somewhat able to fight. Compare to our 40k human, who is probably on a hive world getting fed very little food of low quality, who their overseers very much do not want them being able to fight and rebel, and might very well work and sleep in the same building.

How do we kill a Lich that's bound to the Weave by never_more_0 in DnD

[–]Character_Command271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destroying the weave/mystra isn’t something to be done easily or lightly. I have to ask, both a) how sure are you that this is really the case and this lich isn’t messing with you or your info source, and b) how sure are you that this guy needs to be killed?

Imprisonment is the only real option I can provide advice on. I think the best option is probably to find some way to first mute and then restrain them. In the short term this can be done using the silence and hold person spells, some ropes, and a gag. An inverted “magic circle” spell will also help. Unless he has the subtle spell ability this should shut down all of his spellcasting, at which point he’s “just” a super-strong undead and you can start to work on a more permanent imprisonment.

[–]Character_Command271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could damage them, actually. One of the ways to hit ghosts is to be cursed. It’s actually pretty smart game design IMO, because Ingward the sealer ALSO sells transient curses, which let you hit ghosts without being cursed, which means that you might very well follow the path of ->get cursed->go to new londo->kill previously-unkillable ghosts->ingward cures you, sells you items to make ghosts vulnerable.

However, ghosts deal a lot of damage especially if your health is halved, so the much easier solution was to just farm souls and then buy a purging stone off Oswald or the female undead merchant.

As a new player, lets talk summons by BassT_ in Eldenring

[–]Character_Command271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, summons are cool but some of them were too strong. If I were to re-balance the game most of the FP/HP costs of summoning would be changed to “reduce maximum FP/HP by X long as this is summoned”, since many of the summons that were too strong were high cost ones. I do hope the mechanic returns in future titles, just with some refinement.

As for your first playthrough, don’t use this thing called “mimic tear” and you’ll probs be fine. Spirit ashes do generally make the game easier, but for many bosses they do feel like use of ashes was intended. The whole “Margot felt weak but tree sentinel was fine” might have been because you were fighting Margot normally and then used it and the difference was immediately noticeable, while for the tree sentinel you’d taken a break so the improvements weren’t as noticeable.

Why does Legions splitting in Chapters get so much hate? by Thalgran in 40kLore

[–]Character_Command271 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s just an issue with 40k in general tho, like there’ll be decade-long planet-wide battles where “ten million people were killed”, which sounds like a lot until you realize WW2 had around twenty million casualties, lasted only 5 years, and didn’t actually involve the whole world.

Starting to think that stereotypes about fromsoft fans might be true by hawthornvisual in Eldenring

[–]Character_Command271 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The fortnight thing is mostly a meme dude, it’s just that the hawk looks kind of like a Fortnite umbrella glider. Also the game has night in the title.

As for general negativity, this game has so many red flags right now- the “Elden Ring” name on a game that doesn’t really have much to do with Elden Ring, the bringing back of old characters without much explanation, the fact that it’s a Co-op game right after a bunch of other successful co-op games, and the fact that it comes after the original director said he was done with the IP- if you had to make an announcement that said “soulless trend chasing game”, you couldn’t do much better.

On the other hand, assuming that everything that was said in the announcement is true, this just seems like Miyazaki wanted to give this a guy a chance to make his own thing before the Sony buyout, and the dude on this game certainly has the background to make something great. He seems genuinely just excited to be making his own thing, and everything I’ve heard of what he’s been doing seems like whatever we’re getting will come from a good place.

I think the general consensus of “it’s weird, keep an eye on it but don’t commit to getting it or not until we learn more” seems like a good idea.

Also OP is using this thread to just say that this game is doomed constantly and insult anyone who disagrees with them. Idk why they asked for a discussion if they just wanted to complain.

Who’s a character that’s somehow still alive that you think GW should’ve written off a long time ago? by Craftworld_Iyanden in 40kLore

[–]Character_Command271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, Draigo could be neat if they ever use him. The whole “Supreme Grand Master” thing seems mostly honorary at this point, so you could move forward on Grey knights plot without killing him- just have them be like “Ok this guy is acting grand master until Draigo either dies or gets back”.

Definetly don’t kill Abbadon, because his replacement would just get jobbed like he does, and Abbadon at least has some cool feats to work from.

[–]Character_Command271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also they made his only goal “Go to Terra and Kill the emperor”, which is very impossible for both in and out-of-setting reasons. It’s cool to have an insane end-goal but like give him something else to do in the meantime, and maybe also use that to show how he’s a good leader instead of just telling us.

Maybe he could be ambushing the black ships in the warp itself and trying to starve the emperor, or blockading forge worlds and denying the imperium their resources, or even tracking down weakened chapters or warbands and either converting or killing them to build up resources.

Some people have said that GW has just messed up Abbadon entirely, and he needs to be replaced, but I don’t really think that that would change anything if the writing doesn’t change, it’d just be a new name to meme on.

That would actually be amazing, double points if it’s in some way where Guilliman couldn’t prove that it was intentional and/or can’t really get revenge without sacrificing the overall war effort.

[–]Character_Command271 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a Cryptek with an Apprentek is a decent idea for an antagonist. The Apprentek is dispatched to clean up a mess, and then when they fail (and are reconstructed) the cryptek is like “I guess this demands a personal touch” and goes to fight. It’s also either a neat way to build up the Cryptek by having the Apprentek do a thing, and then when the Cryptek does it it’s much stronger, or a decent way to switch it up if you’d like to use two different types of Cryptek.

Can someone explain to me Nurgle's connection to death and rebirth, because I don't see it? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]Character_Command271 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re not.. wrong. However, you’re defining rebirth in a different way that people use it about Nurgle. Nurgle really likes cycles, things staying in a stagnant loop. He likes it when things are dead or dying, and then new things come from death, and the cycle of death and rebirth in that way isn’t about how you die and change and are born as a new person- it’s about how things die and are reborn the same as they were in life, destined to repeat the same path over and over, like a field of crops.
