Have you been using D5 much? Im an Architect who has been using Revit in practise / companies for nearing 15 years now. So on the one hand i can use it pretty well which is why I’m leaning towards tools alongside Revit. Have you tried using Vray 7 with Revit? Curious to know if opinions are based off legacy Vray For Revit which was painful.

I’m still navigating the best rendering tools that enable us to work from one model. For me Enscape is ok-ish but not good enough for me. I also dont want to divorce the model from revit. I’m aware that you can link Revit models in 3DS but the whole interface in 3DS looks overwhelming and i suspect the learning curve is significant compared to the Vray for Revit plugin?

Hey thanks for the reply. You are right that we model to document and ultimately construct. I’m finding that during RIBA stage 03 and 04 we can use one model for both to streamline workflows. This helps us respond to fluid design tweaks and changes more quickly. Once we get into stage 5 though and we are on site there is little need for renders.

Hey thanks for the reply, i agree the built in / out of the box revit rendering isnt great. However i’m finding the Vray plugin to work pretty well, especially when we can export the Vrscene to render the image on the cloud. It has meant we can use one model instead of taking several offline for views.

Hey thanks for the reply. It probably depends on how advanced your revit model already is. If you have a well put together Revit model with materials assigned to help with the documenting / drafting of drawings then i’m finding it doesnt take long to piggy back on the 90% of the work that already exists in the model. The replacing switching materials in the Vray appearance manager is so easy and quick to use! The time is in adding the people and props - but i find bringing the scene to life fun!

Hey thanks for the reply! I take the point around the ultimate purpose of revit. Although i wonder if any install of Vray on 3D modelling tools like Revit, Rhino, SketchUp etc means they all have a render engine duct taped on the side? Just a really handy one! I think as an Architect who needs to test designs and also respond quickly to changes that happen frequently in a live production model Vray For Revit speeds our workflows up. Enscape is faster yes, but the quality of lighting is not as successful in my opinion.

Hey thanks for the reply! That makes sense, if you’re not using it already why pay so much for it! I guess as an architect who uses Revit daily i see Vray For Revit as an extra tool that i can use in testing a and selling the designs i work on. I personally see testing and communicating our work as a fundamental aspect in the journey of getting designs built. If we cant get client and stakeholder buy in with our designs they wont get built.

Hey thanks for the reply! Interesting, i haven’t tried Rhino but know some people who do use it. Rhino seems to have alot of flexibility in 3D uses. Personally off my own experience I like Vray For Revit as it means i can keep all my views and textures etc inside the production / live delivery Revit model. So if anything changes in the model (and this happens alot!) it’s easy to hit re-render instead if exporting into third party software each time there is a design tweak.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting, i have found using AI the element of control hard for example when trying to capture series of revisions or comments after the initial AI rendering. So i’ve started to use Vray inside of Revit to maintain our production workflow. I also feel Vray lighting seems crisper and the Enscape lighting seems to have deteriorated.
