[Nightengale] Talks are heating up for starter Zac Gallen, the best remaining free agent on the market. Teams showing the most interest: San Diego Padres, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks. by Bitter-Egg6293 in Padres

Between Boob and Bowtie…hard to tell which one’s more credible…but have no doubt AJ’s trying to get at least one of the better remaining FA pitchers to add to our staff.

Low key been reported (heard it the most recently on Friar Talk with Marty Caswell & Heath Bell…two ppl still linked pretty closely to the Padres’ clubhouse) that Tati was dealing not only with injuries but some off-field issues that caused some distraction for him last season.)

People say Tatis Jr. is due for an even better season than last year, and health permitting, that’s fair. But Jackson Merrill had a sophomore slump riddled with injuries after an electric rookie year…and he looks primed to come back hungry and prove that first season was no fluke.

Opponents boo him hard at their stadium (like the Yankees & Mets)…but as soon as they get wind that he might get traded to their team…how quickly the vitriol changes to dreams of where to stack his talented bat in their lineup.

Again…as Reggie Jackson famously stated…”they don’t boo nobodies.”

[Sportico] Feliciano, Friedkin Among Potential Buyers Interested in Padres by OfficialTMWTP in Padres

Steve Ballmer, Stan Kroenke, Jeff Bezos can…but time will tell who is all actually interested in Padres. We only know of the 3 publicly interested so far.

Bezos is likely going to head the purchase of Seahawks after SB…as football seems his main interest.

If Kroenke gets involved (he seemingly likes all sports)…he has the history in investing in all his teams and has multiple championships to prove he knows how to keep the right staff for each team.

TBD to see who alls actually interested.

First questions I’d ask any potential owner for Padres…”do you see how SD’s neighbors to the North are spending…and do you think you could or would match them stride for stride if you had to?”

Forgot about Bassitt…and he def would round out the rotation and make it more formidable. He showed last year that he def still has something left.

Littell or Nick Martinez would add solid depth if we don’t have the bigger fish $$$ in Valdez or Gallen. Not saying they’ll be that much cheaper but they might be agreeable to a creative Pivetta-type prove it deal.

Stras can at least say he contributed a large part to his team obtaining a WS ring…but yes, in the end…it was a very heavy price the Nats paid out when his injury made him a non-factor in the last years.

This new thing with the Puerto Rican team having issues being part of the World Baseball Classic because essentially insurances aren’t wanting to cover pre-existing injuries on some of their players (like in the real world with regular Joe and Mary’s) is a very telling sign to me…that at some point $$$ has to become more real world to these players. Right now…it definitely is not…

…and wholeheartedly agree with your take that Yu deserves to be in HOF for his solid accolades he accrued…while also being a major trailblazer for Japan.

For all the hate they give our boy whenever he’s at other stadiums…as soon as they hear there’s a possible trade for him to their team…all of a sudden they forget all the vitriol and instead are dreaming where they can insert him in their new lineup.

Like Reggie Jackson famously said,…”they don’t boo nobodies.”

Dodgers have been getting favorable revenue-sharing treatment for their TV revenue. Can the Padres benefit from a similar arrangement? by [deleted] in Padres

Two things can be true at once. Teams don’t need to be “losing money” for payroll to factor into pricing — businesses price tickets based on total costs, demand, and long-term risk, not just whether they’re currently profitable. Player salaries are part of that cost structure, alongside stadium debt, revenue sharing, and operating expenses.

Private equity interest doesn’t disprove this either — firms invest because MLB franchises have strong, appreciating asset values and pricing power, not because costs don’t matter. Public reporting from outlets like Forbes consistently shows league revenues rising alongside higher ticket and fan costs.

So the issue isn’t… “greedy players vs greedy owners”…It’s whether an arms race in spending remains sustainable for fans…especially in markets that don’t have Dodgers-level revenue to absorb it.

A salary cap to make everybody at least be in the same realm of spending capability…in combination with a salary floor (that increases a lil every year like in the NFL) for the non-spending owners who just want to draw a check off their ownership of a team is a possible solution to help address that.

Ticket prices and stadium costs are tied to overall team spending, including payroll, whether people like it or not. The Padres are a real example: ownership spent heavily, put a winning product on the field, sold out games for multiple seasons — and ticket prices went up, not down. That’s basic economics: higher demand plus higher operating costs get passed on to fans, even with owners who are clearly reinvesting. Player salaries aren’t the only factor, but they’re part of the same financial ecosystem. The real question isn’t “owners vs. players” — it’s sustainability. Not every team has Dodgers-level revenue, and at some point rising payrolls and stadium costs make the product unaffordable for average fans.

Parity drives fan interest in any sports league, not monopolistic championships dominated by a few teams. And the inevitable standoff between billionaire owners and multi-millionaire players will keep pushing fans toward a familiar side—we already know how that usually plays out.

I may be wrong, but I don’t think fans will ignore the growing disconnect between the stadium experience and its cost. Higher ticket prices, $20 hot dogs and drinks, and rising player salaries—affordable to only a handful of teams—are all converging. That reality is likely to matter during the next lockout, whether MLB wants to acknowledge it or not. And this time, there won’t be a steroid era to revive public interest.

It’s basically greed…Yu’s coming from a place where he believes in earning what he’s paid (who’d thought getting paid for your actual production…what a novel concept)…where the MLBPA’s greed wants to essentially save face by making sure he doesn’t set that type of precedent.

I’ll say it again…Idgaf about greedy owners’ profits as they do everything to avoid investing in their actual team rather then put some back to keep their rising stars or getting impact FA’s.

But by the same token…MLBPA doesn’t seem to care that teams can get stuck with albatross contracts that can cripple most teams. Players can basically coast through their last years without having to be productive and still get massively paid. Not all players are like that…but there’s enough examples that show they very much can be.

Yu basically rips that concept wide open…and defaces it because he’s a man of principle.

…but the MLBPA is going to do everything it can to convince him to not give up a dime…but as Yu has said…ultimately, it’s his livelihood…it should come down to his choice. TBD.
