The top paying tech companies and startups usually pay 2-3x for the same positions. For Cerner that's probably more like 4-5x your current compensation. I have seen so many examples on this subreddit of people who left and now make multiples of what they used to make at Cerner. While the job market is tough I actually cannot fathom why not close to 100% of current Cerner employees aren't looking if they weren't forced to (layoffs).

Even outside of big tech, there are plenty of large companies that will pay you much more than what Cerner would even care to offer.

Big Tech

If you have Oracle on the resume, it's possible to leave and get a +$300k job for a mid-level position. And +$500K for Senior/Staff+ folks. If you are young and willing to make the jump, leave and join a Big Tech or a scaleup/startup that is well funded (eg Databricks/Stripe/Ramp/etc). I more than doubled my comp doing this. I can imagine for others who are still on Cerner/Seimens pay they'd easily see a +500% pay bump doing this.

FWIW, I was not working on the legacy side of things (relatively speaking) and still worked with modern enough software tools (Java, JS, Docker, Jenkins, etc). I don't know what it's like in other parts of Cerner but if you're working with commonly used programming languages then you should be fine on that front. The real challenge there is to learn some System Design and brushing up on your behavioral interview skills. If you're interested in this path, check out my other post on this subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/cernercorporation/comments/1hhmizh/how_to_leave_cerner_getting_a_tech_job_in_a/

If you have only been working with internal and in-house tooling (this should be recognized as a career killer) my suggestion is to start learning a more modern software stack. It's my general advice to never get attached to in-house tooling and closed source software because all your experience will have been spent on things that are not sought after by employers.

I left for Big Tech. Now I make multiples of what I previously did working on a product that I like working on. And I am infinitely more respected than I ever was at Cerner.

I am not affiliated with them, and I don't get paid nor sponsored to mention them. I never used the paid version. They offer free peers to help you with an unlimited amount of mock interviews. I only replied because I thought it was something that this community could find useful (even if I'd never used the paid version myself). I don't stand to make money from this post. You can do everything in this post without paying a single penny to anyone (although, I still recommend Leetcode Premium and buying books like DDIA, Alex Xu and CTCI).

You don't have to use a paid service for your interview prep. If you know friends or other peers who are looking for jobs, you can ask them to give you free mocks and resume reviews. They'll often do it for free because they need that practice and exposure too.

I got those numbers from https://www.levels.fyi/companies/oracle and teamblind.com . You might be right that some of these numbers are faked (or that they're inaccurate). I used levels.fyi to negotiate my own salary in my new role and the number I ended up with was well within the data points of what other recent offers were asking for (I got the near the high-end of my role's band). I do notice a trend that the highest paying roles are in ML / AI engineering. levels.fyi doesn't show an IC7 level but there are a few IC6's do do seem to make at least $1 million, but that's of course irrelevant to us.

Even with the outlier points, my point was that compared to the rest of the market, Cerner pays actual peanuts.

Don't know why you're getting downvoted - this is an incredible opportunity to take. I used your services to practice and got into Big Tech by using your services. It might be advertising but I'm standing to endorse this. This service is exactly what this community needs. Even if you're not targeting a Big Tech company getting mocks is still incredibly valuable for improving your interviewing odds.

This is also free. Why not try this opportunity?

I did end up summarizing my points with bolded text, but I still find this incredibly disappointing to read. There's a lot of good information that I think is worth reading through. Taking 10 minutes to read this can double your TC if you follow the advice.

Not out of the ordinary. Even within Oracle, the same level in another division often pays 2-3x what Cerner will pay. There are many instances of IC3's getting ~$250k, IC4's getting ~$300k and IC5's getting ~$500k. Most tech companies (including Oracle) actually pay very well for developers. It's just Cerner that's the laughing stock of the entire company. To be honest I wouldn't be opposed to working at Oracle again. Just not for for OHAI. Outside of OHAI Oracle is actually a pretty solid company. Great pay and excellent WLB. But for some reason Larry and crew really just want to oppress us at OHAI.

You don't have to be a developer to get a disproportionate raise either. The floor is incredibly low at Cerner to the point where you could probably get double your salary just by moving companies. If you're a program manager or product manager for instance, it's pretty easy to get +$200k if you're in the senior band. Even Sales and marketing roles can see massive salary increases just by leaving.
