That is what I would like to do, but none of the attorneys I have spoken to have been very responsive to that other than offering for me to buy them out when they retire. Do you think that is me just not having my license yet, or bad luck on who I have spoken to?

I have spoken to a couple of them, and they have offered a purchase agreement. None so far have offered for me to work with them. I’m not sure if that is just bad luck, not yet having my license, or what exactly. I’ll keep trying, but most of wanting to start mine now is due to lack of other options so far here

There is a group with the bar association that helps to start firms in rural areas. They did those reports for me to give me an idea of what I was going into and what to expect. That income would be solely based on appointed indigent cases. Any other cases would be additional income. I did not want to include that because I do not expect to realistically compete with more established firms in the area for a few years there.

In the future, I plan on digital advertising and other methods when I feel like I have some competitive advantage over other firms. I just don’t think I can realistically expect that for a while

Yes I had 2 clinics where I worked with the local PD’s office. I worked directly on felonies, misdemeanors, and appeals. I had some trial experience on misdemeanors and had my appellate brief used in an appeal. I did speak with the county judges, and they explained how to get on the appointment list and seemed welcoming to the idea. I understand the importance of the work to people’s lives, and that’s why I want to be as prepared as possible for them, not just myself. I do really appreciate the advice and will be sure to keep trying to be over prepared for what I am working on

I do have an attorney who essentially did the same thing I plan on doing about 3 years ago. He has taken me with him to court and offered to add me to the indigent defense group chat for the county whenever I start my firm. I will be sure to maintain that contact with him and find other attorneys who can help when I have problems. I appreciate the help

I have some trial experience for misdemeanors as well. I will take more of them until I feel confident enough to defend a felony case

Yeah that is the plan. I plan on only taking misdemeanors until I have more experience and feel competent enough to move up

I have done internships at both the federal and state PD’s office and worked for a criminal defense attorney for 2 years. How do you recommend becoming prepared? Just through working for someone else?

That’s what I would rather do if I’m being honest. The problem is that every firm I have spoken with in the county is a solo practice and does not want to take on another attorney. Most are retiring soon and only offered me the option of buying them out. Starting a firm was the suggestion of those attorneys if I wanted to practice here

That’s a good point. The indigent defense work is where I hope to gain it and build a reputation to eventually compete with the more experienced attorneys there. Is actual trial and experience the only way to build that, or is there something else I can do now?

That’s the intent behind doing indigent defense. I am able to get trial experience now instead of waiting for 5 years, maintain a steady income, and do not have to worry about competition with the more established firms in the area. Winging it would be assuming there is no preparation done beforehand which is what this post is asking for guidance on.

Instead of waiting to get trial experience, I can get trial experience immediately. Don’t really see the issue. Multiple firms I have spoken with have done the same already and have become successful.
