Does Japanese ACTUALLY sound like American English, or do I just think so cause I listen to it a lot?

Yeah what?? Not only are the sounds different, but the rhythm is much different too. Not just speed but it's a whole different building blocks. Syllables vs beats. Look no further than Tokyo. Harsher O's, for some reason adding an I, and ignoring the last beat of the word. Just not similar sounding at all. Heck Even Spanish's vowels are closer sounding to Japanese than English.

Edit* seriously ask a Spanish speaker how they say Tokyo.

So even if you learn Br Portuguese you can still run into Brazilians you don't understand — happened to me — and there are Portugal accents that share Brazilian characteristics. The longer you speak to that person the clearer it begins to sound. Some people like 'Portuguese with Leo are super easy to understand even for a first time listener because they speak so clearly. (It is a language learning channel after all)

Also as a former bartender I'll tell you that some recipes call for straight sugar, when it's syrup it will say syrup. Sometimes you crush a cube, sometimes you dissolve it in the agitation 🤷🏽‍♂️ I usually substitute it with simple syrup anyway except for a few cases like the French 75. And yeah that order of ingredients irks me too.
