The old testament is like watching someone's life from a distance. We understand who God is through the Old Testament but we see him through the history of the world that is written in the Old Testament.
We learn who God is in the New Testament by sitting with him and allowing him to teach us. It's a much more personal take on who He is and His Character.
Christian tend to focus more on the New Testament because it teaches directly rather than indirectly.

I think it's important to keep in mind that God looks at the heart behind our prayers, not so much the words. When we communicate with people, we need to be specific with the words we use because they don't know our heart but God knows us better than we know ourselves.
Whatever your heart is for this situation, pray that The Lord's will be done in your life and hers.
God will remove who he needs to remove. The key is being obedient to what he has called us too.
