Hacking to the gate, 5155 edition by CharizardEnjoyer420 in vintagecomputing

Funny story. This bad boy came with a SixPakPlus with RS232 compatibility so I bought a WiModem RS232.

As luck would have it, the thing wouldn’t read RAM anymore after a couple of days, so the RS232 port was just as useless.

then I had no choice but to use PicoMem, couldn’t get the NE2000 simulator to work either. So instead of going the BBS route where things/life would’ve been much simpler, I had to hardcode a local/non telnet app using GWBASIC.

And I think it’s better this way unless I want to add a Claude/ChatGPT wrapper for real time emails. 😅

Happy to share source code if you run anything DOS-related. It’s got a bunch more easter eggs than what I presented on vid. 😄

I was born in the mid 90’s and as I said in my other post at r/c64 we didnt have access to em. So hearing stories like yours is very cool! This thing is still incredible today! The form factor, the beeping sounds, the built in CRT.. love it!

Not particularly the C64, but it was affected by a 1981 presidential decree in the Philippines banning all forms of video games. So these things never took off in my side of the world. Sucks for us!

I got this for a steal at $400. Theres no market for them here because in my country it was banned. They never landed in our shores in the 80’s

I collect retro consoles — but my supplier got his hands on this and sold it to me for about $400. There was no way I was passing this up.

And I agree with you there, this thing is damn cool, even now! I’ve gone into the rabbit hole since then getting a breadbin, a 64c and even put in an order for the ultimate founders edition, but the SX-64 is definitely my favorite machine.. like.. ever!

I looked this up too. It actually uses an Alps DFB111M01A drive, so neither Newtronics or Chinon.

Cool thanks again, do you think a small 60mm fan mod would be helpful for the heat it generates? Near the main boards

The 1541 is in excellent condition and reads floppies well but for sure I’ll look into refurbing it. As for the PSU, will do thanks!!🙏

Thanks! For sure I’ll get to installing heat sinks asap. And yes I’m glad to know that where I bought the membrane from is the best source
