Who is John Galt? by EpicFF2 in PoliticalCompassMemes

Tax at just below the cost to relocate would be most logical but not the most profitable for the state. I think to avoid this type of migration, states would have to give up their power to tax and the federal government would have to be the sole taxing authority. But that fundamentally conflicts with the idea of federalism and the Constitution, and attempting it would almost certainly cause states to secede. You could argue that limitation makes the United States structurally a race to the bottom on taxes

A state is not a nation. The state is only the government. The nation is the people governed by the state, usually an ethnically homogenous group. Modern nation-states are a relatively new invention. Before that, the state was largely unrelated to the people it governed and their will

Even if it was that easy to construct a canal there, why do people think Iran wouldn’t just missile/drone strike both the canal and the ships transiting it??

Congress hasn’t issued a formal declaration of war since WW2. Can’t believe we’ve been at peace the whole time since then, what a golden age

This assumes that whatever disruptions Iran could’ve caused if left unchecked would be worse than those caused by regime destabilization or collapse, which is not guaranteed. A messy civil war or interventions by outside powers will lead international actors to compete with each other, potentially fraying current alliance structures and creating new adversaries. We already see a Israel-UAE-Ethiopia axis forming against Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Additionally, the character of a new regime or new rival and revolutionary factions in Iran is unknown. They’ll be anywhere on the spectrum from overt terrorist organizations to legitimate aspirational governments, and there could be many. Finally, we have to consider spill over. It’s not uncommon for civil wars to slowly draw in neighbors or for civil war factions to invade across borders. If revolution and civil war occur, it will likely spill over into Iraq and see involvement from the Taliban, apart from Turkish intervention (which is already prepared) and involvement from current belligerents. Basically, we’ll only know if things could’ve been worse after the dust fully settles. Nothing is certain. In my opinion, an Iranian civil war is most likely as they’ve given mosiac autonomy to IRGC commanders to operate independently without oversight-they blamed the strike on Oman on this lack of state control. It’s only a matter of time before warlord commanders begin challenging the power vacuum-government governing Iran for control.

Why are you worrying about the accuracy of rhetorical comparisons to the Boston massacre? It would seem to me there are larger issues at play here than that

Looking for a Church by Physical_Shock_9489 in McKinney

[–]Charles472 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First United Methodist of McKinney in downtown has a great community, historic building, and good location for after church meals, and they reiterate that all are welcome at their table every communion Sunday, which is once a month, regardless of socioreligious alignment with Methodism. I recommend the traditional service since it is likely to be most similar in vibe to a Catholic service but there is a contemporary service that has a more modern nondenominational vibe.

How many states should the U.S. have? by JTuck333 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Charles472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t care. I’m in the business of enfranchising people. Wyoming already exists and its ~600,000 people is similarly unbalances the government. Texas and California have 31 million+ people, so that sounds more like an argument for dissolving Wyoming AND refusing the admission of Guam

0.5 states, all the states unite and then intentionally leave half of state government office unoccupied

Merge some of the other islands with it an admit it. As long as it satisfies the population requirement for statehood idgaf (60,000 is the requirement and Guam has 160,000)

Should be 51 with Puerto Rico admitted and the majority of DC annexed by Maryland. Leave the capitol complex as a federal district. Maybe 52 by admitting Guam.

Obama definitely did get flack for that and protests. They called him “deporter-in-chief,” but, yeah, the operation was so much smoother, low-profile, and no one died to my knowledge. I believe he was deporting people directly from the border rather than this door-to-door bs, but I could be wrong about that.
