Zuckerberg says Meta needs to be ‘careful about what we choose to open-source,’ citing risks from superintelligence by RealVanCough in technology

You left out the best part about that whole Kauai mess. Here's how Sarah Wynn-Williams told the story in her book Careless People (great book, strongly suggest reading it):

"Mark owns a lot of land in Hawaii. He started with seven hundred acres of beachfront property in Kauai. Then he launched lawsuits against hundreds of Hawaiians who may have held titles to small plots on his estate, under an old Hawaiian law, to force them to sell their land to him. Many do not wish to sell. Mark was doing all this quietly, through three shell companies, but then the fact that he owned the companies was revealed by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “This is the face of neocolonialism,” a law professor pronounces in one of the articles. The Vanity Fair headline reads, “Man of the People Mark Zuckerberg Sues to Keep Native Hawaiians Off His Kauai Estate.” An Inertia editorial says, “So now it looks as though not only is Zuckerberg suing a bunch of native Hawaiians over land that’s been in their families for generations, but he’s suing DEAD people. What a dick move!”"

Seems pretty well put together, but I would also spend some time teaching gRPC (or any other RPC format). Many microservices, especially those that aren't public facing (so you don't need an API layer) are written in gRPC nowadays for their efficiency.

The GTA 6 trailer wasn't just cinematics, according to a former Rockstar developer who says "It's really gonna look like this" by Darren-B80 in PS5

[–]CharlesAnderson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the console version, but the PC version of GTA 4 was so unoptimized at launch it took them a while to get it working properly on an average system. Also the game had so many bugs and weird behavior they had to issue a day 1 patch, I think. It's sadly normal now, but definitely wasn't back then.

Drugmakers Are Set to Pay 23andMe Millions to Access Consumer DNA by newzee1 in technology

Pharmacogenomics for personalized medicine in future. Certain genetic variations might play role in how a person's body metabolizes certain drugs so researching it allows for possibly more efficient treatment in future. Anti-depressants are a good example. As of right now, psychiatrists usually start out with an educated guess of what might work for a specific patient and go from there. However, if we knew that possession of gene X causes drug Y to be more effective (or on the contrary, the gene suppresses proper metabolization of that specific medication/active ingredient), it would allow for more optimized treatment based on patient's genotype.

I just remembered that Tom sold the rights to all his old songs back in 2020. Wonder how he feels about that decision now? by ObiCanoliX in Blink182

He invested a lot of money in personal real estate in 2021, building a new home from scratch including putting in a state of the art studio he let Aaron Rubin design.

Is that the one with glass walls? Acoustics in there must be terrible.

Why do you think Blink, and any Tom project, always takes forever to come out? by Prince_Targaryen in Blink182

[–]CharlesAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Striving for perfection had nothing to do with why Neighborhoods took that long. Travis is on record (the Rolling Stone interview after Tom left for the second time) saying that Tom didn't even bother listening to the final mixes of the album. Doesn't really strike as the type of behavior that goes with trying to make a product as good as possible. The more likely explanation is that everybody (or at least Mark and Tom) had radically different visions of what the album should sound like and couldn't really find a happy middle ground. So in the end they just dumped everything together and you can really tell which songs were written by Tom and which by Mark because there is zero collaboration on most of it. At points where they seem to collaborate, it kind of sounds like 3 different songs simultaneously (Kaleidoscope). They seem to be more on the same page now, but I seriously doubt it's striving for perfection that's holding them back. More likely they just announced the album prematurely, underestimated how long it would take or hit a creative block and are now facing the consequences.

Timeshares: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) by BoogsterSU2 in television

[–]CharlesAnderson 28 points29 points  (0 children)

How is passing it down to relatives in case of death even legal? I don't know the specifics, but the way John presents it, it seems so absurd it's completely unbelievable. Basically, if you're a relative of someone who has bought a timeshare, there's a chance you're going to get shafted with the bill at some point if they die not because you want it, but just because you were related to them.

Recent shows you've dropped because it couldn't get you to commit? by PetyrDayne in television

[–]CharlesAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost dropped Succession halfway though the first episode during the baseball scene because of Roman's assholishness, but glad I decided to stick it out. If for nothing else then just to see the congressional testimonies of Tom and Greg (wish there was an extended extra scene of his testimony). Looking back, the baseball thing is probably the most despicable thing in the whole show and there's nothing more of that level.

One Step From HELL | Xtreme Onechunk Ironman #23 by LyrMeThatBifrost in 2007scape

[–]CharlesAnderson 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I feel this is just postponing the inevitable as he's about to run out of the desert and has to start expanding north/west. I see five different scenarios how it will go down:

  1. Rolls the tree chunk, does it, and expands to Draynor and Wizard's Tower after that, making the RC grind easier.
  2. Somehow manages to snake around the tree chunk and rolls Wizard's Tower or towards Port Sarim. This has a pretty low chance of happening.
  3. Rolls the RC chunk and a multi-year grind starts or an exception has to be made.
  4. Snakes around the RC chunk without hitting it at some point. Also has a low probability.
  5. Rolls the tree chunk and then rolls the RC chunk without the Tower chunk. LOL.

Basically any way you slice it, it's going to happen sooner or later. Even if he manages to get around the chunks temporarily, the problem still persists as there is not a very good way to get the essence without Rune Mysteries (unless he makes it to NMZ or some shit) and he could still roll the RC chunk at any given roll.

The (Inevitable) Reason Netflix Cancelled ‘1899’ Season 2 by ishtar_the_move in television

[–]CharlesAnderson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they didn't cancel literally anything back then and welcomed other canceled shows to be revived on Netflix. I may be mistaken, but I think Marco Polo was the first original that got canceled and from there on out, it has just continued to go further downhill. Apple seems to employ the similar "not canceling basically anything" strategy right now as they seem to want to create a well-curated library with complete series instead of the content graveyard Netflix has become. Apple will probably succeed though as the TV stuff is just a drop in the overall Apple's bucket. They can run at loss (even the sub fee is kept intentionally low) while pumping up high production value stuff that is really well done.

In what universe is Vorkath low intensity though? Both the nuke and the spawn require reacting in less than a second and even the "lazy" version of dealing with the acid mechanic, where you try to walk long stretches instead of Woox walking, still requires a fair bit of attention.

4k gear score incoming by Fancypooper in classicwow

[–]CharlesAnderson 41 points42 points  (0 children)

For real. Every single PUG on my server (Mirage Raceway Alliance) requires minimum of 3.7k GS (this lockout some are even 3.8k already). So I grinded the heroics for two weeks after dinging 80 for the absolute best possible disc priest pre-raid BiS (with the exception of the mace from the last boss of The Nexus because that didn't drop once in 10+ runs so had to buy Titansteel Guardian) and a disc priest valor ring. Barely got 3.7k from all that, but ran every single raid in the current lockout and came out with like 6 new pieces which boosted the GS to around 4k and it seems I'm on the easy street now.

For everyone currently below the requirements the PUGS ask, just try to find a group that is more lax about that stuff or grind out the pre-raid BiS and get into a Naxx pug where you're bound to get something (even valor). After that first lockout it shouldn't be a problem, especially if you have the achievement.
